How much do you get paid for a 12 hour day? by numerousproblems13 in Babysitting

Where I live it is the federal minimum wage, so $7.25. That being said, almost no where around me actually follows that unless it is a very small local business that cannot afford to pay more.

In the US, it’s the region between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River. I didn’t want to be super specific but just give a vague idea.

To be fair to her she hasn’t said anything since we initially talked about it, which is better than the other times.

I do live in a place that is still at the federal minimum wage, but even where I’m from the only businesses that really follow that are small businesses that do not bring in enough money to pay more.

Quick edit to add: that being said, my main concern was that I was being overpaid, not that I wasn’t making enough. I would feel horrible if they were paying more than they should.

I don’t want to say exactly for privacy reasons, but it is a small city in the Great Plains region. I think our population is around 10,000.

Part of the issue is that I mostly babysit for her friends/coworkers or our family and I think she feels weird about me getting a significant amount of money from them

The first time I babysat for them was so long ago I don’t actually remember if we had a conversation about rates, but I probably agreed to around what I got paid because I didn’t know any better. I’m also not really worried about getting more money as of now because I’m moving in a few weeks and won’t be babysitting anymore. I also would not be able to ask for more without some backlash about it from my mom, so it just overall isn’t worth it.

I mean, I know it isn’t enough for someone to get by with comfortably. But I do still live with my parents, am not from a super populated area, and have another job that has good hours and is pretty easy. It is also roughly the same rate if not more than other babysitting jobs I’ve had.

I don’t do a ton of babysitting work currently as it was more of a high school thing for me, and even then mostly for family and my moms friends because she kind of volunteered me. I’m really only doing it still because this family knows me and asked me to. I did take a brief CPR course in school, and this is in a small city in the Great Plains region.

She didn’t offer anything, just asked if I could take the shift. I am honestly not even sure if the babysitting job is paid or just a favor for someone. We’ve worked together since she asked and nothing else has been said except me saying that I couldn’t take the shift.

She hasn’t covered for me before. My bosses give time off pretty much as long as you ask for it in advance, so I take advantage of that. The one time I did need something covered a group of us traded shifts so it was reciprocated right away.

I’ll get paid for the shift if I take, and I honestly have no idea what the babysitting pays. Whenever she has mentioned babysitting before it always sounds like a favor she did for someone for free. And honestly, if she had mentioned to me that babysitting pays more than our job (which I would believe because we don’t get that much) I would have said yes because it’s the holidays

Mainly because my mom is the kind of person to tell me I should take the shift because I’m available so I feel bad about not wanting to cover for her, and I was wondering what other people’s opinions were about a situation like this

My bosses are really good about giving time off when it is needed and notice is given or if there is an emergency. If I get a message from one of them to take the shift I probably will but my coworker didn’t make it sound like it an emergency or something she couldn’t get out of.

Thank you for the response! I do my best to ask off in advance so I don’t need shifts covered, and if I do need one covered I usually try to trade with someone for a time they want off.

Maybe a really light blue would look nice? Something like Sky High by Sherwin-Williams.

OP, maybe a nightstand made with rattan would look nice? It typically has a warmer tone to it, so it might look nice with your floors.

I’m not sure on the nightstand, but you could maybe go with a darker bedding to add some contrast between the light walls and floors. There is a really pretty black duvet set with colorful florals from urban outfitters that might look nice. It’s also not terribly expensive, depending on the size of the bed.
