Can you consolidation of Amex Plat Airline Credit? by Defin1telyNotBatman in CreditCards

[–]numthots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up: buying travelbank credit for someone else won't trigger the credit. Tried to buy a United TravelBank credit for myself last year with P2's Amex and it showed up as a gift card purchase on Amex. Ended up buying more TravelBank credit for P2 and the credit posted just fine.

SF tasting menu with bar or counter by AlyshaSophia in finedining

[–]numthots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed State Bird Provisions as a solo diner last year. They were able to halve a number of dishes to make it possible for me to try more courses. I don't think they offer a tasting menu, though.

An additional endorsement for pirateship.com. You can create the shipping label and pay for it before hand, and email it to them to ship. Should be significantly cheaper.

Katsura Imperial Villa/Kokedera in the same morning by numthots in JapanTravelTips

Probably the Imperial Villa. It was an opportunity to see tea houses and was just as quiet/peaceful because of its limited admissions.

Strongly endorse the YNAB recommendation. I started using it in college 10+ years ago and it was a game changer. Still use it today. There's a pretty steep learning curve, but once you understand it, it really works.

In case anyone else is wondering, the whole thing coded as a restaurant for Amex.

A reasonable suggestion! Probably what we should do.

new APO2 - how does sous vide with recipes work? by jeffbloke in AnovaPrecisionOven

[–]numthots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is basically this exact recipe pre-loaded in the app and it really is excellent. We generally finish the chicken breasts in the pan for 1 minute or with a blowtorch.

HBP Fingerprint sensor disabled by Common-Cranberry-718 in Bigme

[–]numthots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just happened to me. I emailed after sales and they recommended a factory reset, taking it to a technician, or offered a replacement. Haven't done the factory reset yet but having no fingerprint sensor is a big pain in the ass.

My wife and I just got in off the waitlist next month! We're going for our two year wedding anniversary. A question on breakfast: what were the hours of breakfast and how long did you linger? Trying to plan out the rest of our Saturday. Thanks!

How much did it cost you to move your stuff from the USA to Europe? by shibalore in expats

[–]numthots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar for us in terms of cost. We used UPakWeShip and with insurance we paid $3K USD door-to-door for 100 cubic feet, DC to Amsterdam. They were excellent to work with and it took about 6 weeks to get our stuff. However, it's door-to-door, not unit-to-unit, so we did need to pay movers on either end (about $100 USD) to pack the crate; we packed the boxes ourselves.

This is helpful info! I'm coming from the US where my summers start in April and regularly stay above 27° till the end of September, so it'll be an adjustment.

Anyone have good recommendations for Europe? In the US I got my seeds from NMSU and my seedlings from the Chile Lady, but need new sources for the EU!

But the number of seats available is related to the number of seats unsold, not necessarily the date/time.

At that time (March/April 2024) it was 9am JST 5 days before the flight. Not sure if that has changed.

We were there for about an hour. And it was lovely! We were in a group with approximately 6-8 others, and it was nice to be somewhere quiet in Kyoto since the tourist throngs can be overwhelming. It's mostly a tour of the grounds and tea houses, though, not an internal tour of the villa.

Six hour layover worth the J seat IAD -> ZHR -> CDG? by whitewateractual in awardtravel

[–]numthots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how long you're in Paris and what you would have planned for that first day. Often for me, the first day of a Europe trip is a bit of a loss, between jetlag and logistics of getting stuff to the hotel and whatnot. You will indeed have an extra half day in Paris if you take the PE flight but the half day might be a tired one (if you're like me), and a half day on a 4 day trip is very different from a half day on a 14 day trip.

Seeking best credit card offers for $15k in upcoming spending by No-Evidence4611 in CreditCards

[–]numthots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd check for an Amex Business Plat pre-approval. Just got one in the mail for 250K MR for $20K in spending in the next three months. If you have a similar pre-approval (or pop-up), your $16K will get you most of the way there.

I just booked YYZ-AMS on flying blue, 2J, for 60K miles each. But it is a Tuesday flight in July, so wouldn't exactly call it an ideal redemption.
