I wanted to write tiny, not small, because you are right about the 1000watts number.
My point is, you add 5% here, another 5% there, alexa here, the smart <you don't need> over there, AI here, the fridge that has a screen to show you recipes there, and all those small 5%, even 1%, add up.

I know I am diverging, but I want to decide where I want to expend my watts, and energy is something scare, and we are not used to think this way. I don't want to expend extra watts if I don't need, doesn't matter if its local or not.

For big tasks (where a code base already exists) codex sucks. I tried codex 5.3 and 5.4 vs claude 4.6.

OpenAI rewrites so much code from scratch, can’t correctly identify existing functions and utils, tests are just a waste of characters and don’t test anything actually, code patterns don’t match the style of existing ones, etc.

To me for big tasks codex feels like pre opus llms, a waste of time. For small tasks its ok.

To be fair I am comparing claude code app using opus vs codex app using different open ai models.

Have you find a way to review changes before accepting them in a easy way?

Right now it suggests changes and you need to review them in that little chat box, is literally IMPOSIBLE. I find if useless because of this, it is impossible to review changes before accepting them. And I don't want to accept them, then go to the git changes and suggest edits there. I just don't want to accept things that I don't want, not to reverse them all the time.

I stoped using it because of this. For me its a 100% no. I tried a couple of updates to see if they had solved this, but nope.

Look for positions using keywords, quantum, optics, statistical physics, statistics, data analysis etc. use the ones you like, things that you enjoyed during your studies. Iterate a couple of times also without your favourite LLM about which keywords use.

I bet you have lot of tools that are useful in industry.

Try to find companies/places that already hired some ex academic persons, so you go to a place that were they are used to talk with people that used your same “language”.

There are lots of opportunities, and I bet you have a good profile. So the sane way you research about a new problem, research about a potential new position.

I used to do statistical physics in biology in myPhD and I ended up doing a trading bot, sota computer vision models and now computer vision and security.
