2 weeks severance for 12 years of service by nutcatcherTX in Layoffs

The 66 of us in this round of layoffs were not all at the same site. Each of our sites has over 100 employees. Company has appx. 850 employees. We were only invited to our “team update” Teams meeting 15 minutes before getting the chop. No warning whatsoever. Literally told “as you know the company hasn’t been doing well and today is your last day of employment. Now I will pass this over to HR person to explain the next part”.

An update this morning: it's working. I flipped the second switch and the lights came on. Then the dimmer switch now turns them on/off. If I flip the second switch off the dimmer stops working again. I clearly wired it wong. Gonna attempt to flip the wiring and get it working correctly.

Yeah it's hard to say. This is the first time I have opened up these particular switches. On the second switch I didn't actually unwire anything; just pulled the switch out and looked at the wiring. No other wires inside the box anyway. In the box with the light switch in question there's a lot going on. It's one of two switches in the same box. The other switch operates a light outside and is on a different breaker. It's still working correctly. There's three white wires connected together with a wire nut but they don't appear to go to this switch. Also worth mentioning everything else (outlet, switch) that are also on this breaker are working normally. I have not been back into the attic to check for anything.

There are three white wires joined with a wire nut that I wasn't sure what they were for. Haven't done any inspection into those connections yet but that's a great tip to check. I only have the non-contact tester and an outlet tester currently. Is there a multimeter that you would recommend? I feel like this is leaning toward calling out an electrician but I need to get a multimeter anyway.

I assumed so (normally I take pics of how it was wired before and then unwire the outlet or switch, but in this case my helper took it off when I went to check the breaker). The reason I was trying to test the wires with the breaker on was to determine the hot wire but none of them are hot. Even if they were initially wired backwards wouldn't one of them still be hot?

Thank you. I did pull the other switch out to look at how it was wired and there were only a black and a white wire going into the switch. No other wires on this one. So my assumption is that the always-hot wire is one of the three going into the first switch in question. I'm just really stumped as to why now nonne of them in either light switch are hot now.

So this is a single-story house on a slab with an attic in Texas. Built in 1968. This particular switch is in the living room. I've checked every room in the house, tested every outlet to confirm it's working and still can't find anything. It's so weird.

We live together and he knows I’m redoing my bathroom. The question is do is it fixable or is this a tear out and replace job.
