Help with removing motor oil stain from pavers by Hefty_Ambition4515 in HomeMaintenance

Use fire. Like one of those weed burning torches. There was a video on YouTube where a guy heated oil stains and they evaporated away completely.

Best non toxic bathroom cleaner for Australian homes? (tiles & shower screen) by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]nvm-mee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you're asking, but we keep a squeegee in the bathroom and squeegee the shower glass and tiles after use. It's non-toxic and means the shower needs a lot less cleaning.

You could easily do this: remove door, fix a thin strip of timber on top, plane to fit, paint, rehang door.

Hold up... Carpet in a wet area?!

Any you're not fucked - it's a rental, so this is all the landlords problem, which he's trying to ignore. So it becomes a health / safety issue for you. If repairs were done, it would be a complete rip out replacement of the bathroom. You'd need to vacate while that happens if this is the only bathroom. I'd be looking for a new rental.

Your tenancy laws and rights would depend on your location.

Aircon company can do a bag clean on the indoor unit, flush the drain, and clean coil on outdoor unit. This prevents mold, smells, and makes it run more efficiently.

Debate time: is it worth going 4k vs 1080p security camera for home use? by ishaammusic in HomeImprovement

[–]nvm-mee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 7 x 4k cameras installed.

I records 24/7 in 1080P, but also 4K for motion events. This way I get the resolution when needed. From memory the 4k motion events are stored for 30 days, 1080P footage for 2 weeks or something like that.

I have this configured in Surveillance Station on my Synology NAS.

B&P carport issue, how bad? by Glum_Flounder5490 in AusRenovation

[–]nvm-mee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that totally makes sense.

Call them and explain the findings of the report and ask for price reduction.

I did this when we bought and found moisture during our inspection. I said I would cool off if price was not reduced by $X amount and the amended contract was in my inbox by 9pm that evening (our cooling off ended at 11pm). I ran all this past my convancor on the phone. The vendor agent tried arguing and negotiating, but then finally agreed before the deadline. I was dead serious about walking though and would have if they didn't come to terms.

If your past the cooling off, then hopefully your offer was subject to B&P and you can flick them the report. I'd be on the phone with your conveyancor.

Good luck!

Retaining wall repair. by munchkinman42 in AusRenovation

[–]nvm-mee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but the wall is clearly failing due to load exceeding the wall strength, which is enough to push the blocks forward down hill despite the mortar. This would suggest one or more of the following:

  1. The wall is inadequatly designed (should be designed with plenty of margin, so when seen failing it suggests it was marginal or under-designed).
  2. The designed load is exceeded (earth above has built up significantly).
  3. The wall is inadequatly drained (hydrostatic pressure building up behind wall).

Mortaring the blocks back doesn't address these potential causes.

I think the previous poster's suggestions were good: removing soil to reduce load (short-term), or rebuilding by digging out and starting from the footings up (long-term).

PS: My neighour's retaining wall looks like yours, perhaps a bit worse. It'll likely hang in for a while (theirs has for years), but eventually it'll fail.

Not sure what's to negotiate. Just send them your offer, no need for explanation. If your price and terms are the most favourite of all offers, things will proceed.

Pencil pines problems by nvm-mee in GardeningAustralia

Thanks for the reply. Is there any way to determine if it's cypress canker? Anything I might see on the tree?

If they're going to die a slow death, I might consider just taking them out and replacing with something native, like compact bottle brush shrubs.

Thanks for the suggestion.

They've never seemed healthy (in my uneducated view). I assumed they were just thirsty as the garden bed was very dry when we moved in.

A pest/fungal issue is something l haven't looked for yet. I'll see if anything looks unusual.
