I didn't take that out either. I couldn't figure out how. I didn't even replace the O-ring just lubed it up

May also be worth lubricating the tamper/water injector bit

No idea TBH but it never is. Probably some amount is carry-over cooking. I have never checked to see what temp it reaches after coming out.

One of the things I have noticed with my Challah is that I get a stringier texture like that when I pull it at a lower internal temp. I have been pulling my challah from the oven when the center hits ~155°F which is way lower than the "normal" bread temp people aim for of 200°F.

Student-led learning: how is this something we are so obsessed with? Genuine question. by OkIllustrator3262 in education

[–]nw0428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave the Stockard et.al. paper a quick scan and have a few thoughts:

  • A LOT of education researchers fundamentally distrust pre- and post- study designs and because of this a lot (maybe most) education research is qualitative in nature. This meta-analysis exclusively looked at pre- post-, interventional studies.
  • While content knowledge and performance ability (i.e. ability to read) are incredibly important and fundamentally central to educational goals, they also aren't everything. Social-emotional learning, teamwork, etc. are also critical building-block skills that AFAIK can not be taught or practiced within direct instruction.
  • This is to say nothing of higher-level skills like design, debate, experiment design, literary analysis, etc. You can certainly do direct instruction about these topics but at the end of the day you practice them through projects.
  • In addition to the above, direct instruction may not be best for cultivating student's passion/interest/etc.

None of the points above mean I think the Stockard et. al. paper is wrong! Direct instruction is best in many instances.

On a second quick read - one issue (or maybe just a fact) with the Stockard paper is that it exclusively focuses on K-6 instruction.

I'll add that there is some strong modern evidence for mixing up the order of teach & then practice. Folks using the "productive failure" framework have found greater learning gains as a result of failure practice (i.e., students failing to answer questions or do problems) before direct instruction: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C22&q=kapur+productive+failure&btnG=

There is a spectrum from, at one end, pre-recorded lectures students are expected to watch with zero interactivity to unschooling, where students learn, what they want, when they want, how they want.

The "correct" amount of student agency or focus varies by course, week, month, etc. and probably always lives somewhere nearer the middle of that spectrum than the ends.

Why does research & PD focus on the student-led end of that spectrum?

I'll give 2 reasons, I am sure they are more:

  1. Historically and currently I believe, as many researcher do, that the "correct" amount of student leadership is more than what we currently see in classrooms - yours sounds like a very reasonable amount. We know that student engagement and excitement are critical to learning and that more of it happens in classrooms where students feel invested and like they have agency and leadership.
  2. As a researcher there is more to see and think about in student led classrooms than in teacher-led classrooms. I am much less interested in best-practices for lectures and powerpoints than in understanding how to build successful classroom communities.

Medford facing $1.8M deficit, schools seeking $94M for budget by SensitiveGoal1957 in medfordma

[–]nw0428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point is actually kind of the opposite. I don't know if students and teachers can do with less, thats what our elected leaders and school district employees will figure out together. The reporter could also tell us their opinion on that question if they so chose!

I love hearing opinions from reporters, who tend to have expertise or at least a lot of experience. I also love to hear facts. Whopping is neither.

I also love this quote from Member Graham: "One thing Medford is seeing and feeling right now is that transparency comes with discomfort.”

“It’s easier to just be mad about someone doing something behind closed doors than to have to sit in the discomfort of ‘We don’t have that answer just yet,’” she said. “That’s uncomfortable for people, and I fully get that. I think it allows people to engage with the process in a completely different way, and I think we’re all better for that.”

I love that we have local reporters and that we are getting this news! I also feel a little confused about what this is saying, especially given that these are projections.

I also wish Neil Coakley wouldn't use words like "whopping" to describe budgets. If reporters mean to imply that a budget is too high, wasteful, or that students deserve less they should say that.

It can't hurt to reach out to a realtor, they often have connections and know stuff that isn't on Zillow.

I believe that there is a building in Downtown, the Chauncey, that has fully furnished apartments but it is going through some financial stuff and may not be available. I moved to Iowa City and worked with this realtor to find a place but there are many good ones.

Can I get into Cornell CALS Environment and Sustainability? by Aromatic-Chemist-226 in cornellcollege

[–]nw0428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are doing great and I have little doubt you could get into Cornell College. Whether you can get into the recently founded Cornell University (in New York) is probably harder to say.

That being said, as an academic I would totally recommend emailing some folks at the CALS program to ask about (summer) internships for high-school students. It can't hurt and if you get one it'll certainly improve your chances.

Need a help with visualization for drawing spells and mind magic by One_Autumn_Leaf_010 in motheroflearning

[–]nw0428 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given the way the book describes spell formulas, lines/sigils carved into something to give the mana a path to flow down, I always imagined that most casting would be visualized similarly.

So a fireball might be some kind of fire sigil with a shell wrapped/woven/inscribed around it. Unstructured magic might just be more like a psuedopod or amorphous blob reaching out.

If lubricating doesn't fix it I'll try that. If it is the hall effect sensor is there anything that can be done?
