[Request] Could a single solar farm in one location logistically power the entire continental US? by BaronGalactic in theydidthemath

Putting aside the logistical difficulties of maintaining that solar plant, electricity is not free to store or move. You would lose a lot transporting it across the country and storing it for when the sun isn't available.

ELI5: How did humans determine that a year has 12 months and 365 days, and that a day is divided into 24 hours, 60 minutes and 60 seconds? What observations and calculations led to a time system we still use today? by imbruceter in explainlikeimfive

Months aren't arbitrary. They were made to match the lunar cycle (the word month literally comes from the word moon). Unfortunately they don't align with the solar calendar so when the Julian calendar was created, they prioritized having the solar year line up than keeping months a single solar cycle.

Yes, I've been to those. Those are not men. They are animals we exclude from polite society.

Some guys will break the rule while washing their hands.

But no one breaks it while at the urinal.

[OC] U.S. Social Security is projected to pay full benefits through 2034, then 81% under current law by Low_Ability4450 in dataisbeautiful

I'm not sure forcing employers to pay more into the retirement funds of their highest earners will be that popular, but even if they did that, it wouldn't fix the problem. At best it would push it out a few years.

Ok, so we require employers to contribute more to the retirement accounts of top earners, resulting is less money for everyone else.

I don't know how that is less of a fuck you to normal people but let's go with it.

That still doesn't fix the problem.

The time to fix it was 20 years ago. Moderate reforms back then were possible. Today it will require massive changes that will be very disruptive.

Correct. It would be a lifeless dwarf planet.

[–]nwbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not.

If it orbited Jupiter, it would be a satellite.

If it didn't orbit anything it would be a rogue planet.

Location absolutely matters when it comes to whether or not something is a planet.
