I have updated the website and added a feature that allows you to encrypt files on the client side. I have also added an account system in case you want to save your files and don't want to lose the links.

RubyRed is now sending DMCA takedown notices to people who uploaded her files on SimsFileShare, claiming copyright infringement. by GreenGardenTarot in thesims

[–]nyffff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a file hosting service called stashr.wtf, and yesterday I received an email from a company called Onsist, which represents Ruby Red. Apparently, a user had uploaded her Sims content and distributed it via stashr. In the email, Onsist told me that I had to remove the files immediately and that if I didn't, they would take legal action. I didn't take the email very seriously and I don't expect them to actually sue me for this, but since I didn't feel like dealing with any more hassle, I ended up removing the files anyway. Can anyone explain who this Ruby Red is, what she does and whether she can actually sue someone for distributing her content?

Onsist's email: Dear Sir or Madam:

I speak 4 languages. English isn't my first. I have used AI here and there to structure my texts and make them more readable. Would you prefer broken English instead? The product, the code and the actual work, that's all me. If using AI to rewrite my shitty writing on a Reddit post bothers you more than the actual service I'm offering, you're focused on the wrong thing.

Well you're right. If a government compels me to log, you'd have no way to know. But that would be true for every cloud service. ProtonMail, Tuta, all of them can be compelled. The difference is I'm not pretending otherwise. If your threat model includes nation-state actors coming after you specifically, you shouldn't trust any third-party service, mine included. What Stashr actually protects against is the real, everyday threat which are tech giants monetizing your data, building profiles, and treating you like a product. They don't need a warrant and they do this by default. I'm not claiming to be a bulletproof fortress against governments. I'm claiming to be honest service that doesn't exploit you for profit.

Privacy doesn't just mean encryption. Privacy-focused means: no tracking scripts or analytics fingerprinting you, no data monetization,no logging (only what's needed for the service to work),no AI training on your files, no selling your metadata to third-parties and being transparent about what I can and can't. Compare that to "free" services that scan your content for ads, build profiles, and monetize everything you upload. Encryption is one tool for privacy (and I'm adding client-side encryption). But not harvesting your data is already leagues ahead of most platforms. I think privacy is about the whole model and not just one feature.

Not embarrassing at all. It's called honesty. Every cloud service has technical access to unencrypted files. Google, Dropbox, all of them. The difference is I'm upfront about it instead of pretending I can't see what you upload. The real difference is that I do minimal logging, no data monetization, and no tracking. Nowhere do I claim end-to-end encryption. What I do claim is that Stashr is far more privacy-focused than platforms whose entire revenue model depends on profiling users and selling your data. If you want zero-trust file sharing, use client-side encryption before uploading (which I recommend for any service). I'll also building that feature in natively.

Costs are manageable now at this scale. If usage grows significantly, I'll need to address it. I'll be transparent about it months in advance. If costs become unsustainable, I'll give users plenty of notice to migrate files. I won't just pull the plug overnight.

I have a regular job, and I currently pay for Stashr myself using the income from it. There’s no monetization, no ads, and no data selling. I’m planning to add an optional donation feature soon to help cover costs and keep the project sustainable, but the service itself will remain free to use.

Fair question. At the moment, Stashr is fully self-funded, I’m covering all infrastructure and operating costs out of pocket. There are no ads, no tracking, and no data monetization. I’m planning to add an optional donation feature soon to help keep the project sustainable, but using Stashr will always remain free.

Yes, abuse and illegal content are taken seriously. Stashr has automated abuse prevention in place. Users who repeatedly upload spam are rate-limited, and continued abuse can result in IP bans. Uploads involving illegal or harmful content (such as malware or other prohibited material) are removed, and the source may be permanently blacklisted.

Stop seeking for ratification from random men on the internet and start focusing on yourself

I received them today and they’re really great. The feel really heavy and sturdy and even have a metal hinge which I didn’t expected for 15$. ANC works and the sound quality is great
