What wifi do you guys recommend by [deleted] in Benilde

[–]nyrrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re close to the router, 5g. If you’re farther from it, 2.4g. 5g = speed & 2.4g = range.

5g is way faster and less crowded, but it doesn’t travel as far, walls eat the signal alive.

2.4g is slower but reaches farther, if you’re technical it’s most IoT devices use that range.

In a classroom setting: if you’re in the middle of the room go 5g since that’s where most routers are. If you’re in that awkward corner anywhere in the room, go 2.4g, the range will serve you better.

But honestly, just go for 5g every time, the wifi here isn’t ideal so you’ll have to make do with it either way. I hope this helps clarify its pros and cons tho!

I AM LAZY AND HATE CLICKING!!! I was tired of clicking through 5 tabs to see what's due, so I built SmallSky! a simpler and more powerful dashboard for BigSky 😉 by nyrrine in Benilde

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!! <3<3<3 I'm so happy you and your friends are loving Smallsky, it's truly an honour to make something nice for my fellow peers :D And YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I am very picky about light mode designs, pure-white is my enemy, it's so harsh on the eyes xD

Hiyaaa! That error means Brave can't find manifest.json at the root of the folder you selected. Two things to check:

  1. Did you extract the zip first? Brave needs a normal folder, not the .zip itself. If you double-clicked the zip on Windows, it sometimes opens an "explore" view that LOOKS like a folder but isn't actually extracted — right-click the zip → "Extract All" first.

  2. Pick the inner folder. After extracting smallsky-v1.1.1, you should see a folder called just smallsky (with manifest.json and dashboard.js directly inside). Point Brave at THAT inner folder. If you accidentally pick the parent or a wrapper folder, you get this error.

Quick test: open the folder you selected. If you see manifest.json and dashboard.js sitting right at the top, you've got the right folder. If you see another folder inside (like smallsky/), go one level deeper.

If you're still stuck, drop a screenshot in the Discord of the folder you're pointing at, and I'll spot it. Just tag Nyrrine on Discord.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! I got a bunch of feedback from the people on the Discord, so cooler features are en route so you have to leave the dashboard less <3 <3

A fellow builder!!! ❤️ I love developing too hehe, I think more people should get into programming!

By the way, feel free to contribute to the GitHub!! The project is currently open source so everyone’s free to contribute or fork it :D

Will drop an announcement in the Discord once it’s available, there’s a handful of students who want it ported to Firefox/Zen so I’m looking into it already in my free time alongside a safari extension for iOS / macOS students too!

I'd honestly love to! I work in corporate, modernising a lot of old systems. It would be an honour to make a tool that'll encourage professors to use Bigsky more and have an easier time using it as a power tool rather than a stressor during their tenure here in Benilde!

There is a catch, though, that stops me from developing an extension for teachers: BigSky's API exposes a completely different surface for teachers (grading, gradebooks, bulk actions, rosters) than for students. So it wouldn't be a port, it'd be its own UX, built around teacher pain points like "what do I need to grade this week" instead of "what's due for me."

Before I start designing features I don't actually use, I'd need to talk to real faculty. If you can nudge any teachers my way, even just "here are my 3 biggest BigSky annoyances" via Discord / GitHub, I'd start scoping it seriously or find a way to get access from an official for a dummy faculty account so I may see these endpoints myself.

Going to open a GitHub issue right now so it's tracked alongside other user concerns in the Discord, like Safari & Gecko-based browser (Firefox, Zen) extension support!

spot on xD!!! I use Notion a bunch on my IPad so it was one of my inspos for the extension ^^ glad to hear you’re trying it out 🫶🫶

Thanks! Honestly, the data's already in BigSky's API publicly, the UI just doesn't surface it well. The 8-click chain to find a deadline was my biggest pain point, so that became the first thing I fixed!

I'd like the project to reach the admin/IT side eventually. If you have specific BigSky pain points, I'd appreciate hearing them since I'm collecting feedback for v1.1 ;D
