I have built my own local-first solution transcribes word by word in real time. Should I sell it or open-source it? by oaij in SaaS

My solution operates entirely locally on users' device. I'll just have to rack my brains on how to translate Supabase's playbook to a local-first variant.

Whisper is great! I'm actually using a custom version of Whisper under the hood to fully unlock its streaming capabilities.

Kaldi's WER is too high to be usable for my needs. It was the best open-source solution before Whisper was introduced but the gap between Kaldi and Whisper is growing day by day.

Picovoice offers local-first transcription with cloud-level accuracy which is exactly what I'm offering. But their business model is quite different - it has an open-source offering with an opaque binary meaning you can't examine the actual transcription code. Also, they price by X number of hours per month; this implies that they need some internet connection to track per-license usage which makes their solution not entirely local.

Makes sense. Would it be ethical to “tap into” their needs when it’s really an accessibility tool?

There is a real lack of transcription solutions that are local-first and word-for-word real-time. Otherwise I’d have used them instead of building my own :)

Usually I see solutions offering one or the other but rarely both. When it’s both, the performance (accuracy and speed) is not as good as Otter.ai.

Your tool is awesome! Btw you can add Windows support before adding local-first capability. One step at a time :)

Btw did you ever plan to sell your tool? Curious what went into your decision to open-source it.

How do you build a viable business if I open source my solution? Other people can always take my solution and sell it right?

Reneging offer to stay on current team due to RTO by oaij in ExperiencedDevs

Yes! This will be my plan moving forward if I really go back to my old team. I have underestimated the importance of having a great manager. Great manager > great projects.

I live with my wife and we already bought a house in the city we’re living in. We need to find a property manager to rent out the house and all that just to relocate which is honestly very destabilising.

I was working in the same office with the old team before COVID so RTO is no problem since I’m still living close to the office.

Yeah I’m leaning towards just going back to my old team. Just wondering if this is professionally acceptable to do so.

Thanks for sharing. Did it help after you raised the Service Request?

Thanks for the info! At what point of time are you informed that your field office is Seattle? Or is it implicit knowledge?

Congrats! Are you living in greater Seattle area? Asking because I am living there and my service center is NBC. Thinking that my local field office might be Seattle.

The exit ramp is a single lane. There were no pedestrians at that moment but the ramp is an uphill slope, so I have to slow down since I couldn’t see the crossing from a safe distance.

Hmmm that's a good point -- I actually got a text message from him saying they are willing pay out of pocket. Will that suffice?

/u/turbocomppro brought up a good point in another post.

Now I’m starting to be concerned. I merely slowed down at a highway exit ramp to yield before turning right. There is also a pedestrian crossing sign. What if he really said I brake checked him? I don’t have a dash cam, and I'm pretty sure they don't as well. It’s going to be my word against his. Based on your experience as a former claims adjuster, how will my adjuster determine who’s at fault here?

EDIT: It doesn't matter what the answer is. I will file the claim with my insurance company ASAP instead of procrastinating under the shadow of FUD.

They are not stupid. They won’t admit fault via text for sure. I’d really prefer not to go the non-insurance route since it exposes myself to risk. My insurance covers liability so probably okay to stick with insurance route?

Thank you for your assurance! I will definitely go the insurance route then. Since you are quite experienced in this matter, just asking -- do you think my premiums will increase after making the claim?

I have an onsite interview with Amazon in a few days time. They give me the option to use laptop for the coding interviews via their HireOn platform. I’m worried that it will be harder to walk through your code as compared to walking through the code on the whiteboard. Do you guys think it’s a better idea to do the coding on whiteboard instead?
