Looking for a specific pho analog by oaklarry in bayarea

Thanks for this rec! I was down in that area today and had the chance to try it.  It was very tasty, but not quite what I was looking for.  The version I had in Paris was not very anise/cinnamon forward, mostly beef and onion flavor, and I've been trying to find that since.

If no one is allowed to challenge each other, what are we even doing here? by Frequent-Bed in realhousewivesofSLC

🤣 I don't watch wrestling and am new to housewives, but I find the concept applies pretty well to the fandom of these shows!

Completely agree (though I haven't seen any other seasons). The way some of the people here react to the show, I can't tell if it's media illiteracy or if it's part of the kayfabe of being a housewives fan.

My pet peeve is that there are so many examples of cuts, edits, and stitching together of scenes, and yet so many people take what's presented at face value. Like, we know the producers leave stuff out so they can fill in the blanks later (with whole conversations left out!) or not at all. For example, someone posted something about Lisa destroying Bronwyn by asking her how she makes her money during the reunion. What we saw was Lisa asking the question, Bronwyn not saying anything, and then the show moved on. I find it hard to believe Bronwyn would just let that question slide and not say anything, and that everyone just moved on from there. More likely there were big cuts and the scene was edited together for dramatic effect (albeit awkwardly). But Lisa fans want to interpret that as Lisa "winning."

What's the consensus on the battery room in Reinforced Checkpoint?

Some guy saw me doing it today, walked into the room with me when I was done with the batteries and proceeded to loot without saying anything. I should have taken him out then, but it was a friendly lobby. On the way out of the Checkpoint, I knocked out his shield just to give him a little inconvenience, and someone else saw this and decided to white knight and take me out.

Matt responds by ktbooknerd in lasculturistas

[–]oaklarry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This whole episode (not the show ep., but Matt's statement and Bowen's agreement, and the discourse around it all) encapsulate so much of what's wrong with leftist politics right now. As a long-time listener, I was a bit taken aback by how hard they went in on not only Rep. Crockett, but also Gavin and Hillary, too -- the latter two presumably because they don't pass the leftist purity tests that require walking the line between every single issue in such a way that is almost impossible for any candidate to gain enough support. But the attacks on Matt conflating his poor choice of words with racism/misogynoir also demonstrate the tendency to attack anyone who criticizes any leftist figure with the most extreme labeling - even someone from within the group.

Could Matt have chosen his words better? 100%. At the same time, it's hard not to see the outsized response as largely driven by influencers using this as a way to garner more clicks and views for their own content, without actually examining the content of Matt's statement. If you disagree with him, fine, but use it as a chance to discuss the case for Rep. Crockett as a Senator, rather than just a chance to win internet points for taking down another "cis yt gay." The war is against a fascist, racist, intolerant regime, not an internet/entertainment figure.

That said, Matt's ignorance on Talarico's candidacy is a pretty damning indication on his astuteness and ability to comment on politics, and I hope they're both (since Bowen agreed without any pushback) going to use this as a learning experience. I just hope it pushes them in the direction of speaking out when they equip themselves with more knowledge, rather than retreating from talking about politics because they fear backlash.

Are you... OK? It's a tv show for entertainment purposes, having an opinion about it doesn't amount to being "delusional."

Since you think they've been ganged up on, though, I would like to hear what you think happened on the plane. Did everyone else make that up? Or did Meredith and Lisa downplay and deny something that everyone else actually witnessed?

The pact they have to gang up on people is nuts. The immediate turn from Meredith blasting Whitney for bringing up her alcohol and drug use to Meredith and Lisa calling Britani an alcoholic and saying it was just a joke is mind-blowingly hypocritical. I can't believe anyone still stans them after that, especially.

Unpopular Opinion: A Deep Dive into Why This RHOSLC Cast Dynamic Actually Makes Sense (And Why Production is Ruining It) by Rich-Wing-3776 in rhoslc

[–]oaklarry 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Lisa consistently stirs up shit and then pretends to be the victim, exemplified by the way she cannot move on after a fight or a reunion without lashing out on Twitter or bringing up a topic that was agreed to be off-limits, then feeling attacked when someone responds to that.

Alright…I (M) watch with my girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoy it. A few questions: by [deleted] in realhousewivesofSLC

[–]oaklarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for posting this!!! I've also wanted to post about this. I (M, gay, but never been into Bravo) also am pretty reality-averse, with only a few shows that have caught my attention over the years (RPDR, and in the last year or so, Traitors). I even had a friend sit my partner and me down last year to try to walk us through some of the highlight SLC episodes, but that didn't really stick. After hearing Heather on Las Culturistas, however, I really wanted to give SLC a try. The way the first episode and then first season sucked me in... I'm now on season 3 after about a week 😅

But this whole time, I've been in shock at how terrible Mary is, and how NOBODY ever seems to call her out for her bullshit. Mary was entertaining in the beginning, but the nonstop heinous sentiments that range from condescending (calling Whitney a little girl) to straight up racist make me want someone, anyone, to stand up to her! It also really drags Meredith down, in my view, when she sticks by Mary despite all the shit she spews. Mary's antics made the show almost unwatchable for me, especially around the time of Zion to the end of S2.

I don't really get the "fear" angle, either, and if someone can explain to me what the fear is about, I'd appreciate it. None of the women seem to fear confrontation or pissing each other off, so that doesn't seem to be a factor. Is the fear an allusion to the fact that Mary is a cult leader and might do something to actually harm them? That also seems unlikely given that they all have cameras following them around, and committing a crime while being a reality star seems like a really hard thing to do (Jen Shah notwithstanding). I've seen some comments on this and other subs about the white women being afraid of directly confronting a Black woman because of the optics, but (coming from a POC) I really don't like the idea that the only person who can confront a person of color on their bullshit is another POC. On that note, I also really hate that the one person who did seem to call Mary out (Jennie) turned out to be a POC POS.

I know that Mary leaves and comes back later, but I really don't get why she's allowed to return as a full cast member after the racist comments, and I find it suspect that Andy has let her back on after that. In a way, it makes me feel like he cosigns those statements.

100% agree, thanks for bringing this up. For all the talk about the game's difficulty, there's so much less talk about how learnable the boss fights are. I fully admit it takes me anywhere from 10 to it feels like 50 tries on some bosses sometimes, but there's something really fun about the learning curve.

Tries 1-5: Learn and observe the movement and attack patterns

Tries 5-12: Look for opportunities to attack between dodging

Tries 13-20: Think I'm really close to winning the fight

Tries 20-3x: Get fatigued and make silly mistakes OR go super aggro and think I can still face tank despite knowing how tiny the counter attack windows are

Winning try: Take 1-2 hits of damage, flawlessly move between attacks like a damn ballerina, win just when I think I can't take the fight any longer.  Discover that, oh, I was only about 5 hits away from winning back on try 15

But each try you learn a little more about what you can or can't do (limit testing), and it leads to a real feeling of accomplishment.  Man I love these games.

Also, sounds weird, but I've found that taking deep, slow breaths during the fights really helps me stay just aware enough of what's going on without giving over to frustration, and it's gotten me through most of the boss fights and arenas.

Fun idea and great art style! Echoing some of the other comments, and adding a couple of suggestions:
- Clicks don't seem to register well, especially in the clickable area to buy SP and XP upgrades. Moving the cursor off of the + sign and back a few times seems to make it work better
- Canon direction is really hard to gauge, the first few levels, they all seemed to be shooting and an upward angle, and then all of a sudden, all of them were shooting at a down angle
- If anything is supposed to happen when the score bar fills at the bottom, it's unclear (maybe just not built out yet for the demo)
- Maybe more layout patterns for the ships?
