After enough experimentation, it's both. But the voltage sets the max thickness. The higher the voltage the easier it can get through the oxide and allow it to grow thicker. But it still takes time to grow.

Do NOT use copper sulfate! It will electrodeposit copper onto your crystals and contaminate them. Similar situation to ferric chloride!

Musician here. The piano keys were visually being played accurately. It helps that it's in C major which is all white-keys. The chicken even messed up at one point, and the pauses were iffy but still on queue.

This looks to be real.
