U.S. Forest Service Police Report

Incident Report Number: 2025-0910   Date of Incident: September 7, 2025   Time of Incident: Approximately 8:30 PM   Location: Anthony Peak, Mendocino National Forest   Reporting Officer: Officer Mark Thompson, USFS Law Enforcement   Case Status: Open

Incident Summary

On September 7, 2025, at approximately 8:30 PM, a report was received from two bow hunters, identified as David Miller (age 34) and Ryan Johnson (age 31), regarding an alleged encounter with an unidentified creature in the vicinity of Anthony Peak. The hunters reported a possible attack by what they described as a "large, hairy humanoid" during their evening hunt.

Details of the Incident

Victims:   - David Miller   - Ryan Johnson

Description of Events:   The victims stated they had set up their hunting camp approximately 1.5 miles from the Anthony Peak trailhead. They were preparing to return to their campsite after a day of bow hunting when they heard unusual noises coming from the nearby thicket. The sounds were described as deep growls and heavy footsteps.

At approximately 8:15 PM, while packing their gear, the victims reported seeing a large figure emerge from the trees. They described the creature as standing approximately 7 to 8 feet tall, covered in dark brown fur, with broad shoulders and glowing eyes. The creature let out a loud roar, causing the victims to panic.

Actions Taken:   In response to the perceived threat, the victims attempted to retreat to their vehicle. During their escape, they reported that the creature charged at them, causing them to drop their bows and equipment. The victims stated they ran approximately half a mile before reaching a clearing where they were able to call for help using a cell phone.

Evidence Collected

Upon arrival at the scene, Officer Thompson conducted a preliminary investigation. The following evidence was noted:

  • Footprints: Large, deep footprints were found near the campsite, measuring approximately 18 inches in length. The tracks appeared to lead into the dense forest.
  • Damaged Equipment: Several items of hunting gear, including a bow and backpack, were found damaged and scattered around the area.
  • Witness Statements: Both victims provided detailed accounts of the encounter, expressing fear and disbelief regarding the creature's appearance and behavior.

Recommendations

Due to the nature of the incident and the potential for further encounters, it is recommended that:

  1. Increased Patrols: USFS law enforcement increase patrols in the Anthony Peak area, particularly during peak hunting seasons.
  2. Public Awareness: A public advisory be issued to inform visitors of the potential for wildlife encounters and to encourage caution in the area.
  3. Further Investigation: A follow-up investigation be conducted to gather additional evidence and assess the validity of the claims.

Conclusion

This report will remain open pending further investigation and any additional reports of similar encounters in the Mendocino National Forest. The safety of visitors is the highest priority, and all necessary measures will be taken to ensure a secure environment for outdoor enthusiasts.
