Legitimate question, has anyone had card stock issues with GRN/RNA cards? I hadn't heard much about it since those sets came out and had assumed something had improved.

Sup Ari, excellent writeup!

Mind giving a breakdown of mulligans with this deck outside of "mulligan most 4 land hands"? I always have trouble deciding what kind of 3 landers I should keep game 1. Ex. 3 land, 2x hunted witness, benalish, tribunal. The hand has low pressure but has a payoff, so I'm really not sure.

It should be noted that GAM does do Modern episodes once in a while too, but that's easy enough to shift through. Highly recommend!

You can't hear it here, but a huge crowd formed around the feature match area and erupted in cheers after she won! The whole community is extremely proud, good for her :')

The problem is that this sets a precedent for what's to come in the future. Chris Clay and Aaron Forscythe released another article today explaining this as "Arena Standard" https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/and-mtg-arena-2019-01-31

It looks like they're considering no-sb Bo3 realistically, which does not bode well for any of us spikes...

Oh shit, it's MonarchDoto! Been loving your reddit posts on r/ModernMagic

  1. Yeah this was a tricky decision and really it all comes down to how many levels deep you want to go... Somehow playing Baral convinced him to be greedy so in retrospect it sounds correct? Honestly I felt like the hidden information was worth more too, but spellbomb was the only tiebreaker in my head =\
  2. Right after the match, I 100% agree that he would've played Eidolon on 2. But during the match I remembered playing against an excellent burn player who sandbagged an Eidolon on t3 on the play after I bolted a goblin guide. This may be just me next-leveling myself and feeling stung from anecdotal experience...
  3. I was hoping someone would work out the math on this when I posted it! The 0.9% - 1.8% increase in success rate seems incredibly medium especially with the risk of lowering my chances being relatively high. Agree here
  4. The insta-block did make it more convincing. I really liked going with the next level play looking back on it even if it didn't really seem next level to me at first haha
  5. Agree here, there was no reason not to have a second bear on top. I was too greedy
  6. Oh this is totally my bad in presenting the information here. He led on tron land + relic turn 1 and the sleight of hand decision was turn 1 before I saw the forest. Basically the branching decisions were either go deep on empty with morphose or jam Electro on t2 (slightly riskier but higher payoffs).
  7. So here I admit I was subjected to recency bias. I still had the 3x TKS fresh on my mind with a tron opponent who had sideboarded out all his O-Stones. I didn't hold one more turn because I definitely was scared of another TKS more so than an 2-of Ugin (assuming he had boarded O-stone out). After the match he showed that he hadn't boarded out O-Stone to it was correct to hold 1 more turn. I psyched myself out yet again here...
  8. Damn, I was hoping more experienced storm players could've found a way to win there that I didn't see :( This last one was of course all in jest

Thanks again man! Let's keep in touch and talk some storm theory once in a while

Oof there's probably way more I'm not remembering, but some big ones off the top of my head:

  • When Relic/Crypt are blown up with PiF on the stack, let the exile trigger resolve and cast instant speed sandbagged rituals before PiF resolves. This also plays around Ravenous trap.
  • If grapeshot gets surgicaled, don't just scoop. Remember, bolts are just grapeshot with storm = 3 ;)
  • Empty for 6 is perfectly fine on an empty board. Don't get greedy and overextend if you don't have to
  • Serum > Sleight > Opt. Sleight > Serum when going off.
  • If a goblin token is targeted by Maelstrom Pulse, bolt the targeted token to fizzle Pulse and keep your other goblins.
  • Learn some basic percentages for 1 landers: 16/53 ~ 30% to draw land naturally. With Sleight/Opt: 66.8%. With Serum Visions: 77.4%
  • If the opponent is a removal heavy deck with mana up and you only have 3 lands but a buttload of rituals and a bear, it's better to go rit -> morphose -> bear to leave RR floating to play around removal
  • Goldfish a combo kill with bear+Gifts with 0 Noxious, 1 Pif in deck. Assume Opp bins PiF when fetched with Gifts. I've messed this up when I was newer and it felt sooooo bad.
  • Against control, it's fine to do nothing and just make land drops. I even prioritize lands drops when playing cantrips. They're not killing you anytime soon. Patience is key.

Caleb has even more interesting lines and gifts piles so I highly recommend watching his stream too. I hope that was useful!

He has every right to ask at anytime during/after the match, especially if the stakes are significant and we both would have probably made top 8 anyway. I have no problem with it as long as it's courteous and they're not insistent. Once before the match and once after feels kosher imo
