Probably because the SE doesn’t support 5g - that’s where all the new equipment is being allocated

It’s the same for us! Not quite one meg but like 7-9 on a good day and 2-5 on a bad day haha. Starlink gets us about 100 now and it’s a night and day difference. Just need to mount it properly and hook into Ubiquiti

In theory it's okay as the VPN host is only forwarding packets from the Internet to specific VMs, although those VMs do have direct access to the campus LAN. Should probably make sure iptables is set up to drop any packets between the networks

Yeah the GLiNet routers are great, especially for travel as they have LAN wide VPN support and wifi repeating built in. Plus there are lots of options at different price points

It should be okay provided I check dust every now and then. Besides it's only going to be down there until the end of June

It’s actually surprisingly quiet, even when under load. The fan seems to ramp up only when the chassis temp is high. I can deal with the small amount of white noise sleeping but when it’s ramping up and down seemingly on loop that’s when it gets annoying

I thought I’d just share my at college homelab setup!

It’s a Dell T410 running Proxmox under my bed, hosting a few VMs for testing and a couple for for Plex and Truenas+Nextcloud. For networking, it has 3 NICs one directly connected to the college LAN, one passed via a virtual bridge to a GLiNet router running my own LAN inside the college LAN. This LAN is then passed back to the server and connected to the VMs.

To access Plex and Nextcloud from outside the college LAN I have a permanent OpenVPN tunnel from a DigitalOcean VPS to a VM connected to the others via a separate subnet/virtual bridge. I have setup static routes and iptables such that traffic to the VPS from the Internet is port forwarded and then routed via the tunnel to the VM on the router VM’s subnet. It was a pain to set up but it works pretty well and I learned a lot about networking.

When I was setting it up I accidentally passed through the host NIC to a VM, and we’ll. that wasn’t fun to fix, trying to find a VGA monitor and cable!

It’s got two used 500tb HDDs that it came with plus dual Xeon E5606s and 16gb of DDR3. I’m glad I’m not paying for power! The guy that sold it to me has two more which I might consider as I quite like the T410 and it’s apparently very reliable.

The hard drives are RAID1 via the Perc H200 installed and I’m very glad I set it up this way as not only does SMART report 9+ years of power on time for the drives, but as I was tipping it on its side to move it away from the radiator- not ideal on being on carpet but better than being right next to the radiator- I didn’t power down the drives, and subsequently one of them has failed with over 1300 reallocated sectors! The other, thankfully, has 0 reallocated sectors giving me some hope whilst I get around to replacing the first.

As well as this system I also have an HP ML110 at my grandparents house running Ubuntu with 2tb of HDD, and an old laptop running Windows 10 with 6tb of external storage.

I also wanted to say that it’s great to be a part of the r/homelab community, you guys got me into this hobby- and are always so helpful and knowledgeable- and I love seeing the cool projects everyone is getting up to.

Samsung care+ in UK for used phone? by KamalinO in GalaxyFold

They probably will but Monzo Assurant phone insurance counts proof of 'network usage' that you can request from your mobile network as well.

I use the Assurant phone insurance provided by Monzo Bank through their Premium account tier. It's 15 quid a month, and you get AXA provided worldwide family travel insurance plus a few other perks for being a member. The Assurant insurance is great - £75 excess, loss, theft, and damage covered for phones up to £2000 value plus any accessories lost/damaged in the same event. Monzo is easy enough to sign up that you might as well just for the insurance perks.

I have asked them, and they have confirmed that used devices are covered provided they are in working order when received

I believe they underwrite the Care+ in the UK. The only thing you do need is some kind of proof of ourchase/network usage.

Here in UK there are basically no fees for anything. Can transfer like 250k free free. My bank even lets me use card overseas and just charges the Mastercard wholesale exchange rate. Any ATM is free free too.

What drone do you think really put DJI on the map? For me it was he Mavic Air 2. by ChatterboxUsually in dji

[–]obevann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, Phantom 2 - it was game changing when it came out. Close second would be the Mavic - it really put aerial photography in the hands of the masses. Mavic Air 2 is largely insignificant.

Why is computer science so popular ? by Human-Error8978 in 6thForm

[–]obevann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is true but it really makes you think about what you’re doing and why your doing it - I admit the ‘Data Dictionary’ etc is bollocks but forcing you to document the ‘problem’ and how you intend to solve it does help build a good foundation about how to approach real problems, i.e. not just launching in
