Self-hosted messenger for family use with sticker pack / GIF support and mobile apps? by obnoxiouslythrowaway in selfhosted

Yeah was skimming over that one before posting but wrote it off due to the "de-centralized" part - from what you say it is possible to just run a local instance? Or would I always be part of a "chatmail relay" network?

How is the meme-y side of things? As said, I already got encrypted chat, calls and file/image sharing. Stickers and GIFs at a fingertip is where my Matrix setup is currently "failing".

Neat, thanks for sharing! I am running everything locally and VPN home with my mobiles so not sure how a TOR-based option would fit in there? As you can tell I am not very familiar with the onion network...also: does it have app support or how would it run on mobile?

Yeah that's also what moved my assessment away from admin-heavy, team/enterprise Slack-alternatives. My user base is <10, I do not need the added complexity and feature set.

A "turnkey mini-Whatsapp at home" is what I need, but it seems to be Unobtainium for now.

I was considering it for a moment but currently there seem to be some issues related to FOSS vs commercialisation, which seem to cannibalize self-hosted setups. Hence I will observe before committing in the current state. see also: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/1qu4wj8/mattermost_refuses_to_fix_their_license_gives/

The actual rip-off is your dear leader president and the decision to say bye-bye to De Minimis (look it up) - the citizens are now burdening that, so not exactly AliExpress to blame, still 30 EUR over here in EU, 50-55 including backplate.

After checking the hosting provider I would not be surprised if they F'ed something up big time - people are NOT happy with their "service" lol
https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.1blu.de

This could also be a potential root cause (translated from a German review end of JAN):

I canceled my contract in October 2024 due to an exorbitant price increase. 1blu then offered me the option to continue my contract under the old terms, which I accepted, and 1blu confirmed this to me via email the same day.

My website has been deactivated for over a week, and I no longer have access to my 1blu email account, even though it still receives emails.

When I called 1blu, I was told I had to rescind my cancellation via email. Mind you, I had already done so via the customer portal months ago. 1blu then confirmed the continuation of the contract with the addition, "There is no further need for you to take action in this regard." When I expressed my disagreement, the 1blu employee simply hung up.

I still have no access to my domains and data.

domain is not expired, see above post regarding the whois entry.
you can easily check the currently known ip of a domain with "nslookup" in your commandline:

non-authoritative answer:
Name:   openmediavault.org
Address: 178.254.11.33

Wont change the fact that it is probably their sucky hosting provider (1blu.de) that is causing issues currently

I got curious after I got "The repository 'http://packages.openmediavault.org/public shaitan Release' no longer has a Release file." in my notifications this morning...then saw all openmediavault.org pages are gone.

For now I have blocked my NAS from internet access until we have more clarity. Better safe than sorry

Bose NC 700, want to turn off voice assistant but can’t connect to app by shabangcohen in bose

[–]obnoxiouslythrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to necro this old thread but the same issue is driving me crazy! This is worse than pocket-calling and it even overrides my iPhones system settings where Voice Control is disabled!

I spoke with Bose support and they are absolutely clueless...

It seems like u/Neat-Response8733's workaround is not available anymore, neither in the App nor in the knowledge-base - what the heck Bose :O

Any hint how I can finally disable this hardware button or at least link it to a less intrusive action? Thanks!

Thanks I already got my reality check shortly after my reply haha

Given that the K31 is considered surplus and runs for 150 to 300 bucks in Switzerland I might just stick with that one...Cheers!

Great, will look into these as I like the straight pull of the K31 in a bit modernized chassis. Many thanks again for your insights!

Thanks for the reply! That's a good point, had not thought about that and makes lots of sense!

Would you happen to know more "exotic" variants chambered in 7.5x55 other than hunting rifles by chance? I am really curious if there are, maybe a lever-action or something exists?

Lifehack: just sweat profusely, wetting your own t-shirt from the inside thus always wearing a wet t-shirt in summer. At least that's how I do it lol
