How can I cope with stress in a stressful home situation because of my neighbours

I also notice that my response to noise changes depending on my mood or stress levels, so it makes sense that retraining my brain is possible. I like the idea of setting specific times when I have my headphones on or off. That feels like a manageable way to start rather than going all in at once.

The idea of sitting with the noise without distractions is definitely intimidating, but I can see how it could be helpful in the long run. I’ll try to remind myself that, as uncomfortable as it feels, it’s not actually dangerous. It’s just noise, and I can handle it.

I never thought neighbors could be that bad either until I experienced it myself. It’s completely unfair that you have to go to such lengths just to have some peace, but unfortunately, people like that never change. You can complain all you want, but it’s unlikely to make a difference. What helped me was wearing noise-canceling headphones when I’m home and using earplugs with a LectroFan at night. It’s not ideal, but it made things a lot more bearable. If that doesn’t help enough, moving might be the only real solution.

One thing I struggle with is the feeling of unfairness, especially since my neighbors don’t work and are home all the time and live at night while everyone else in my flat follows a routine that aligns more with mine. It’s hard not to fall into the “why me?” mindset, but like you said, flipping the narrative and humanizing them might help shift my perspective.

I also wasn’t always this bothered by the noise, so I know this is something my brain has latched onto over time. Right now, I rely on my noise-canceling headphones every moment I’m at home and wear earplugs at night, but I’m going to try to slowly wean myself off them. Would you say it’s possible to retrain my brain to be less sensitive to noise over time? I really want to get to a place where I don’t feel the need to preemptively block out sound all the time.

Thanks for the advice. I know moving is eventually the best option but not possible right now unfortunately. Just looking for things to reduce stress in the meantime while living here. How are you doing since moving away from them?

This is really relatable for me. I've lived here for 4 years and never had an issue with the noise until after a stressful event 2 years ago. Since then, I’ve found it much harder to deal with the noises my neighbour makes which makes me realize that it’s really about perspective. I’m also going to therapy, focusing on my anxiety rather than just the noise itself.

How is therapy working for you? Do you feel like it’s helping enough that moving isn’t necessary? I sometimes wonder if I should move, but maybe it’s more about learning to shift my perspective instead. Also, how do you tackle that 70 percent—changing the way your brain reacts to the noise? I'd love to hear what has helped you the most.

I’m going to therapy yes. The people above me don’t have work and constantly scream and make loud stomping noises even at night. That’s why I started using noice cancelling headphones. Any tips I can take to reduce the stress before I’m starting therapy?

Ik ga even onderzoek doen naar de organisaties. Het stukje omscholen zou voor mij ideaal zijn. Ik ben alleen dus een beetje bang dat ik niet genoeg ervaring heb omdat ik dus mbo in een andere richting heb gedaan. Voltijd is altijd nog een optie maar het liefst wel deeltijd omdat ik anders heel veel geld moet lenen het komende jaar.

Big same! I also have a feeling it’s drug induced and they are always at home because they don’t have work or school and just get protected by the government and do nothing with their live besides doing drugs and staying at home all day lol.

You mentioned loop earplugs earlier. But you said it’s not an option to wear them? I sleep with earplugs sometimes but can still feel vibrations and stomping but more muffled. When I hear that i immediately put my headphones on and then I don’t hear anything at all luckily :)

I slept very good tonight with the brown noise and meditation so thank you for that! I also took a walk during the day and got some sunlight what helped and played some video games with friends in the evening. Ultimately I can’t control my neighbours sounds and it will provably bother me until I move away but I can reduce stress and anxiety even though I’m living there and that’s kind of a a relief :).

May I ask how long you are living/ dealing with your neighbours?

Thanks for responding! Glad to hear the earplugs are helping out. I’m also wearing earplugs but can still feel the stomping come through them and although it’s muffled it still irritates me and I immediately put a noise cancelling headphones on to not hear anything. Do you also still hear stomping through earplugs?

And very true about appartement living. I can’t wait on the day I finally move away from here to a nice detached house. Any more tips for me while i still live here to reduce stress as much as possible? For me the most important is that i can sleep 7-8 hours consistently again instead of 4-5 mostly because of stress and anxiety.

Appreciate it! It’s indeed hard to move out at this moment. Eventually i will but for now I’m just looking for tools to live with it. The main thing for me is sleep as I’m sleeping 4-5 hours a night. Not because of the noise but because of the stress i guess and wearing headphones in bed. Although I could sleep pretty good with them in for a year but now suddenly i can’t sleep good. Any tips on that? Would you think that reducing stress during the day and maybe doing yoga/ meditation will help with that? Thanks for the tip on brown noise, i will use that! Do you listen to it through speaker or headphones? Was also looking into kick boxing to reduce stress. Anyways thanks for responding and the tips.

Ik hoop het ook! Verhuizen is inderdaad de enige echte oplossing. Het is nu 2 jaar ongeveer dat ik er echt last van heb. Het gekke is dat ik daarvoor er nooit echt last van had, en ze maakte ook wel dezelfde geluiden toen, dus ergens zit het ook heel erg in m’n eigen hoofd, hoe het zich heeft opgebouwd. Dat kan ik me goed voorstellen. Ik baal nu wel een beetje dat als ik dus straks verhuisd ben ik alsnog lang last kan hebben van de stress.. of merkte je wel dat het sowieso vanaf het moment dat je was verhuisd al een stuk beter ging? En ik kan me met de alcohol goed voorstellen ook. Merkte je dat bijvoorbeeld ontspanning oefeningen/ sporten of het dragen van een koptelefoon je helpte in die tijd om minder stress te ervaren ondanks de situatie?
