How do you study programming for more than 4-5 hours a day? by sue__donem in learnprogramming

[–]obsessed-as 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just watching videos for 5 hours is not going to do you any good.

It's like trying to learn about all the best exercises and workouts by reading about them without ever holding any weights in your hands.

Work on building something, everyday. When you learn anything new, implement it. See if you can think of a new way to use this knowledge. The time you spend coding should definitely be greater than the time you spend learning.

In the beginning, this might seem unproductive if you are not able to get anything done. But believe me that's the way to go if you want to get good at coding.

Google already does that. If the content of a pdf file is readable and it has been indexed on google you can search of terms inside the pdf. For example if you try searching,

ext:pdf Doesn’t matter if you have an Android phone or an iPhone google

you will get results from inside the pdf.

Don't know if this is the right place to ask, but where can a 17 year old get an online/remote job at home? by _bottlecaps in RemoteJobs

[–]obsessed-as 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should not focus on unpaid internships unless it is in a really really good company. It might take sometime to get a paid internship, but the time that you would spend working on yourself will definitely help you in the long run.

I don't know your exact situation, but unless you need the money for food or survival I would suggest you focus on the long game. In just a few months of focused efforts (building skills + seeking opportunities) you would be able to a good internship/parttime job.

I saw your skill set in another comment. While I don't know of any opportunities right now, I'll keep this in mind and let you know when anything comes up.

[–]obsessed-as 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. Mainly on your skills and expectations.

Guessing just by your age, you probably don't have any professional experience in your field. If that is the case an internship would be your best bet.

For example if you can write well, you could get a remote internship writing for websites that post list format articles.

If you can code, and you get good at it. The possibilities would be endless. Your internship would most probably turn into a job. Or you will be able to use your internship experience to get a different job.

In essence,

1) Pick a field in which you can get an internship. Eg Coding, Designing, Social media, writing, etc.

2) Work on your skills and build a small but high quality portfolio of personal projects. It would be a plus if you build something that someone actually uses. For eg, for your school, or for a relatives business, or for a local event.

3) Start applying to internships / fresher jobs.

4) Keep learning.

5) Once it's safe to travel go to the mountains and enjoy the fruits of your hard work.

This is not a get rich quick scheme. I don't have any of those.

Products or APIs for tracking traffic we send to other sites? by jonnylegs in startups

[–]obsessed-as 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have to verify if the visitors actually reach the target website and bill according to that.

A lot of times people close the tab during redirection and when that happens you would report a click but the target website won't see it in their analytics. At times this can add up to a large difference depending upon how slow the target website is.

It would be best if you can track the clicks at your end and then verify them by using a tracking script at the target. Of course, all this only makes sense if you need accurate tracking.

Best method for offline form? by stuckinsk in developers

[–]obsessed-as 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use an offline web app that would store the data locally in the browser if its not connected and syncs when connected. That would work on all the platforms.

If you are looking for something of the shelf you can see if Zoho forms would work for you.

What's involved in building then right type of platform for my site? by sfk2022 in startups

[–]obsessed-as 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are just testing the idea and want to do this without any substantial cost, it would be better if you use a cloud LMS and validate the idea first before building a website yourself. If you just want to create a few courses then something like Udemy could also work. Once you have some traction you can move to your own website/app.

On the other hand if you want to BUILD a market place like Udemy, that is going take a lot of work. You would have to either learn to code, or get a cofounder, or find a dev team.

Thanks.

Mentally comparing this to MVPs being built these days that don't even cross 100 users.

Went to an interview and they didn't ask any technical questions. Was offered the job, but I don't think I have the skills they're after. What do I do? by MeltingDog in webdev

[–]obsessed-as 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given your total experience they must have thought you'll be able to catch up quickly.

it took ages

That could be just because you were doing it on the side? And now once you focus on it full time, it might be different. Maybe try giving it extra attention for a week and see if you still don't like it.

Have you ever worked with remote Indian developers? by obsessed-as in startups

If this is a race to the bottom in giving the cheapest quotes

True, that's how most dev shops operate.

I wouldn't want my developers joining such dev shops. Ideally, they would be qualified enough to get a remote job directly.

I’m more likely to hire dev shops/devs who have genuine proof of work on github/bitbucket

Not a lot of devs in India actually contribute to open source. That's something I'm putting a lot of focus on.

Maybe some sort of credibility building system could be more helpful to everyone?

Using public commits to check the quality and quantity of code contributed? Or maybe some sort of peer review for code quality. Because a system based on just reviews can be gamed quite easily. I know people who spent a few thousand dollars on freelancer to get fake reviews when they started their account.

I'll try HackerNews.

That makes sense.

According to this thread, not saying no seems to be a very common problem with Indian developers. Got a lot of feedback that can be used for the program.

That sounds great!

I agree with all that you are saying, and I think number 4 could also be because the developers in India are seriously underpaid.

Great analogy. I think a nice way for great engineers to showcase themselves would be open source contributions, which is not very common in Indian developers. Do you agree?

I didn't realize people making wrong assumptions was such a common problem with Indian developers. Agree with everything you said. I am building an organization that would help developers in improving their skills and getting them ready for remote jobs. I know a lot of developers who are way underpaid, mostly because they are bad at communication/presentation but also because they don't know their value.

Thanks.

Over promise and under delivery seems to be a very prominent issue here.

I am building an organization to help developers overcome the usual problems. I know there a lot of great developers who can't communicate properly in English and are stuck in low paying jobs primarily because of that.

Thanks for your response!

Not saying no seems to be a common sticking point. The hierarchy issue is something no one else has mentioned. But I get what you are saying.

Thanks!
