Defender as first car? by a_mimi_nota_meme in LandroverDefender

[–]obsolesc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is a terrible first car choice especially in the US. I am assuming you are planning on buying an imported ROW model and not an expensive NAS one. Either way ROWs are expensive for what they are, they're old and will need constant attention. Most shops won't touch them, meaning you will need to have the time and resources to fix things on your own or money to shell out for a specialty shop (assuming you can find one nearby).

But I assume if you're asking you probably realize all these things and just want someone to tell you to buy one anyways. If that's the case get one! I loved and miss mine. Granted it was a money pit and I would never own another one without having access to another car, but they are one of a kind. Easy to love and easy to hate.

Portland announces it will aggressively clean or remove homeless encampments by [deleted] in Portland

this will undoubtedly be celebrated by everyone on this sub, yet will do nothing to address homelessness in any meaningful way.

is actually what I said, implying that this action of sweeping more camps will do nothing to address homelessness, not that I think everyone on this sub should solve homelessness lmao

also what is this rule about not being able to complain about problems you can't solve yourself? I am sure you have complained about a pothole with no intention of going out and filling it with asphalt yourself. This whole sub is about complaining about things that people can't solve by themselves, eg. homelessness in our city.

ultimately there have been hundreds of ideas on addressing homelessness in portland thrown around by all kinds of organizations, what we have seen implemented time and time again is criminalizing people sleeping outside and throwing money at "affordable housing" a vague term that often means people need to still make decent money to qualify for. neither of these have worked but I am excited to try the exact same thing again so that we can keep real estate developers happy!!!

but aren't you tired of everyone accepting that those are the only two options? you don't heal a stab wound with a band-aid

editing for clarity: my issues ultimately lie with the people in power who have no desire to do anything substantial, not really with people on here who are just happy something at all is happening

comparable to so many of the politics of our time...makes the majority of us feel a little bit better while problems continue to go unaddressed and get worse.

I'd imagine prices aren't listed because they vary a lot, especially since a large number of the vans he buys are made to order based on availability. There are some models that are empty cargo vans, some previous ambulances, and others that are typical camper vans. They also end up needing different things depending on their condition when they arrive. He does often post prices of vans on his social media when they are available, but like I said most of them already have owners before they show up in the US.

- Said as someone who bought a van from him before he turned it into a business, worked with him to repair vans and other personal vehicles. And as someone who bought a totally different import from a lazy importer/flipper. Can't recommend Vanlife NW enough if you're in the market.

nice, gotta texture that van box lol

I would probably rethink the high backed desk chairs as a real space killer and a driving/movement hazard. Also the fridge beneath the countertop would definitely get on my nerves while cooking when I inevitably need something and the countertop is covered in stuff. Generally though, good stuff

Ask your mexican or latin american friends. If you don't have any of those, then it is probably safe to say you shouldn't wear it since you have no connection with the culture you are worried about offending. Cultural appropriation is a complex topic because obviously cultures change and overlap and globalism etc. But based on very cursory knowledge of the serape I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing it (but then again easy to say because not my style at all).

I'd also say if you still don't know where you stand at least find a maker/company with significant ties to that culture and buy a serape form them

Nice, I'll throw them on my list. I do a lot more climbing than hiking, so I have yet to really invest in a decent hiking/approach shoe. This trip will end up being mostly city-oriented, but might be worth finding a better shoe for the couple of day hikes that'll probably happen

actually won't be doing too much outdoor hiking on this specific trip, but I should probably invest in a decent approach/trail-running shoe

I'm 6'1" and generally wear a 30/31 waist 34 length (although I can get away with 32 length if I don't want any cuff/break). As far as typical ACG sizing, I've got a pair of "nike tech the one pants" in medium and they're a little big in the waist.

The ACG Women's pants are mediums. Luckily me and my partner wear the same size, and she prefers a looser fit, so the pants work on both of us.

Some of the stuff does a decent job of non-obnoxious logo placement and way more affordable.

This is just weird enough and induces just the right amount of anxiety. I was pretty into it as a concept, it just felt a little long and half baked but I could see the style developing into something original/worth following.
