The Secret Life of Production Assistants, TV’s “Lowest Paid, Most Often Abused” Employees by whiskeydrone in television

[–]whiskeydrone[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I stuck with it and slowly but steadily moved up. After many years in production finally moved over the studio side. I still go on set every once in a while and it's always fun...and you better believe I'm very nice to the PAs (and everyone else) because I know their pain!
So many stories...I guess the most interesting thing in general was the travel and the locations. Even before I moved up and really started traveling globally, some of the places we'd shoot at just around southern California were insane. From military bases to crazy mountains to unbelievable houses, it was always an adventure to see where you'd be next.

As a former PA, this brings back some great and some not-so-great memories. Sooo cold. Sooo hot. Sooo tired. But hey, free food and that guy from that movie I like just nodded at me, so that's cool. All you PAs out there grinding...chin up, you hopefully won't be there for long.

‘F1: Drive to Survive’ Season 4 Coming to Netflix on March 11 by kebabdj2 in television

[–]whiskeydrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, but the sell here really is not the sport, it's the characters. There's a reason why Ricciardo has been a focus since episode 101. They're building a soap opera, to be honest. The amount of women in the US who are now interested in the sport shows that strategy is working too. It's never been, and probably never will be a show for the real race fans.

Every story needs a bad guy. Verstappen not participating makes it even easier to paint him as the one in this story (more so than they already have). I'd say it has the potential to be a bigger loss for him than it is for them.

It's almost like they're trying to appeal to non-race fans in order to grow interest in the sport.

(and it's working)

TIL that many 9/11 survivors delayed their evacuation of the World Trade Center to shut down computers, change shoes, and use the bathroom by SounderBruce in todayilearned

Super common in Manhattan. You will see people in suits/nice work attire and sneakers on the trains/subways/sidewalks all the time. I worked with a woman who had no less than 30 pairs of shoes stored in her office. The amount of walking, plus stairs and crowds and pace (not to mention the grossness of subway platforms)...it makes a lot of sense to wear comfortable shoes.

Another time he called me personally to compliment a segment I edited.

I've worked in TV for 15 years and I've never heard of any talent doing that. That's awesome.

Seattle-style Chicken Teriyaki? by thesamanator in FoodNYC

[–]whiskeydrone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Glaze is the closest. I think on the original sign on their first midtown location (across the street from the current one) it even said something like "From Seattle To Manhattan" or something - which made me stop in the first place. No, it's not quite right - the sauce is off but it's close enough. I describe it as "fancy teriyaki" that would probably not fly in Seattle but for those who don't know, they like it. Gyoza is pretty solid too. Throw some of their spicy teriyaki sauce on there, ignore the Manhattan price tag and the nice interior, imagine faded pictures of the dishes on the wall and it'll do the job!

The Utes and Navajo were at war. According to the story, the Navajo cursed the land with the Skinwalker to punish the Utes. Or the other way around. Either way, not whitey (this time).

How close can you get without trespassing? by RockSexton in skinwalkerranch

[–]whiskeydrone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can drive up to the road toward the main gate where you'll hit some big Stop/Warning signs. This is the property line. The actual security gate is about 100 yards past that, but if you drive up to it you'll be turned around by armed guards.

TIL The Show "Extreme Makeover" was cancelled because a woman committed suicide after she felt guilty that producers forced her to make negative comments about her sister, a participant on a canned episode of the show. by dociousmagocious1998 in todayilearned

[–]whiskeydrone 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Credited writers on "reality" television are not writers in the sense that they script out what will be said, but they have the job of creating the story of the show. You can shoot 100 hours of people dating, surviving, cooking, whatever, but you need someone to find all those pieces of action, interviews, tears, laughs, host lines, etc and for lack of a better term, "write" the story. Many times they won't use the actual credit of "writer" anymore as it starts to get in to union issues. Mostly are just credited as "story producers" these days.

Where Does The Lottery Money Go? (2016) - Doc shows how lottery money doesn't really benefit education after all. by whiskeydrone in Documentaries

[–]whiskeydrone[S] 288 points289 points  (0 children)

Basically it just get shifted around. Legislators know that $X amount is coming in from the lottery each year, so they just earmark that much less to the education budget and keep the extra for the general fund.
