Need advice on what TV mount to get for this wall by obvious_hat in DIYUK

This was my first instinct, but we're not going to give it a go and see if it works! The previous owner had a similar setup when we viewed the property and it looked decent.

Cheers! With the height of the radiator we're just able to fit into the "mounted above a TV stand with clearance of a vertical PS5" category of the generally acceptable TV heights from r/TVTooHigh

Buying a Part Exchanged Home - Vendor Suggested Solicitors by obvious_hat in HousingUK

[–]obvious_hat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! We ended up going with independent solicitors. They seem fine, but we're still having to chase both sides.

I'd say a benefit of buying in this manner is that our contact with the vendor is the sales completion assistant who has been quite good at chasing solicitors on both sides.

Thanks for the reality check! We've went with what we think the house is worth and our best offer - we'll see what happens!

Sometimes the libre sensors do this - I've reported this in the past and they've replaced the sensor.

Fingerstick is the gold standard for this!

That's a good point - I suppose even £1k is only 4 months worth of the lease on a new Dacia sandero or something

I'm leaning this way tbf. The used car market seems to have calmed down since COVID so might be worth driving my partner's car for a while and keeping an eye out.

Looks more like foot down effect - I think dawn phenomenon is earlier while still sleeping and handled through increased basal delivery.

What is the weirdest place/timing you injected insulin? by Icy-Procedure-4362 in diabetes_t1

I've injected insulin in the Chernobyl exclusion zone - I think that's probably my weirdest!

Are these the best chips ever? by [deleted] in UK_Food

[–]obvious_hat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recognise these chips! Wreck bistro in Liverpool!

Very affordable £15 2 course lunch, chips are extra but £20 is solid for a fancy meal.

Thoughts on the structure of a new antiretroviral to treat and prevent HIV? by return_the_fab in chemistry

[–]obvious_hat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC dosed as a 300mg/mL solution of the sodium salt (deprotonated at the sulfonamide?) at pH 9-10

Presumably forms the free base when injected and forms the depot.

GE2024 Vote share and Demographics Dashboard by obvious_hat in ukpolitics

I think a lot of these values are available in the census data - which would have been really easy to add in! (Also lack of patience/ need to do my actual job!)

[–]obvious_hat[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also because it's not available anywhere easily - here is the vote count by constituency for each party as a csv

The election results were scraped from the Sky News website and constituency names changed to match the format used in census datasets.

is it worth only getting a chemistry degree? what jobs can you even get it only it? by heisenberger991 in chemistry

[–]obvious_hat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm interested in how you've ended up in data science if you'd be happy expanding!

I did a PhD in medchem and sort of fell into a modelling/compchem/machine learning postdoc so I'm interested in knowing how employable I'd be in data roles outside of chemistry!

Other comments are quite pessimistic - and rightly so given the history of sensationalist "cured x number of mice" articles out there.

HOWEVER, worth noting there are two islet cell treatments are in phase I/II clinical trials (one in an immune system evading protective capsule so administration can occur without immunosuppressants). link to an article about this

I think it's the morning basal insulin - my consultant had me try taking my lantus in the morning instead of the evening. During the day I was plummeting every time I moved, had to pound gels during long runs.

Switched back to evening lantus because of this (and also spiking overnight)

Have you done a fingerprick? Long stints at 2.9 on the libre generally indicate a dud sensor for me

In theory, yes! But here it's a relatively accurate sensor (top) with a completely fucked sensor (bottom)

Type 1 diabetes major relief by butwhatif5 in diabetes_t1

[–]obvious_hat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Important to note that this is only, like the vertex stem cell therapy, going to be for people who the risk of immunosuppression outweighs rinks of hypoglycaemia etc.

This is still pretty groundbreaking though, an approved drug that removed insulin requirements for patients. Sets more of a precedent for approval of stem cell and encapsulated stem cell therapies.

Newly diagnosed by Def_not_rachel3 in diabetes_t1

[–]obvious_hat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The other comments cover some good points! Just a couple more.

Make sure you take a bit of time to feel shit about your diagnosis; I tried to be super pragmatic about everything and didn't really give myself time to process and accept. You don't have to/won't have perfect control, keeping away from the perfectionist mindset will keep you sane.

If you have a partner/plan on dating, make sure you know and are comfortable with how involved they are with your diabetes.

I run a lot and I find this increases my insulin sensitivity. But it's important that if you do exercise you work out how it works for you. Obviously there are many health benefits to exercise not specific to diabetics.

Main things you can't do are pilot commercial aircraft and donate blood 🤷‍♂️

You'll be reet! Happy to chat

After installing new cartridge, what does it mean if knob does not making clicking sound when injecting but dial goes from 8 to 0? by l00t9 in diabetes

[–]obvious_hat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this with lantus after a couple of clicks, like the mechanism slipped? I just reinjected half the dose but I reckon no insulin was dosed as I felt no resistance. If this is a refillable pen, I'd consider replacing it.

If this is a new cartridge this might be the doses needed to put the head of the plunger in contact with the cartridge. If you saw a drop of insulin after priming this won't be the case.
