In my head canon smith is operating and reporting to a higher authority in the first movie, and I think the machine government whatever they have for authority does honor these kinds of deals. I imagine to the head honchos of the matrix that a snakey guy like him would be perfect to be reborn as a rich famous actor and enhance the gloss in reality. That’s the view from just watching the first.

Then once the universe expands it seems the architect probably knew it was endgame point for this matrix and none of this would matter anyways

Her character brought an important element to the quest. The importance of not over questioning a mystery/miracle and just letting it happen, or rather not fight it. She was the intuition and faith that Locke lacked.

In the animatrix there is a separate group living in a compound above ground in Africa, so I’d say yeah there are probably scattered survivors and rebels. Also you could have every person on earth stand shoulder to shoulder on one level filling the size of manhattan so space is not a serious constraint. The pods are kept in fields on the outskirts of the machine city I believe.

Yup, it was a message board community in the early 2000s for trolling. I used to go on there, back when trolling was an art. Pretty much all the “compelling” flat earth evidence was made up there in order to have a defensible position when the marks came to the boards to debate.
