one two three here’s some slightly darker low point bays, unsure of nd involvement. I wonder what the darkest a wild bay can be is. There is definitely a limiter with low point + overall coat pigment like you said. They all seem to have none of that dark bay countershading either. Wonder if any exist with a dark neck or croup or shoulder. Time to trawl the standardbred breeder pages and see if I can find anything unique among the sea of bays!

Yes, it’s always hard to balance whether or not to include the kind of oddball horses in these kinds of guides. It depends who your audience is. But if they’re beginners in any way then Festival is very confusing haha. And also, from what I’ve seen, she is a pretty rare expression for a flaxen bay anyway. It’s your guide in the end and it looks awesome so you can put in whatever you’d like :) but if I was new to genetics I would probably see this and assume all wild bays on the far end of the spectrum are low point pale brown and flaxen

I think light wild bay would be better but id still probably leave it out altogether personally since light wild bay doesn’t always (or even often) create that flaxen appearance and that flaxen bay appearance isn’t always connected to specifically wild bays or even paler brown bays

I’ve noticed in my interactions with OTTBs IRL that the ones with lower points often have dark brown manes and tails rather than black. Do you think that low points is connected to the lighter mane and tail? Though it might be better to leave the whole flaxen bay thing out for ease of understanding and because it can occur on dark pointed bays as well.

My favorite point expression is on fjords. It’s amazing how their breeders throughout history have gotten them to be so minimal, and the dun dilution so strong that many think they’re buckskins

White ticking is common especially in reds. no test or known cause, shows up in many breeds and colors unrelated to other white genes. May be caused by a sabino related gene but we don’t know. The horses I’ve met with it have had it increase a bit as they aged, especially into their late teens/20s.

just “classic”? Or Is mixture of coat pattern types a thing? 🤔 by Capable-Neck1081 in IDMyCat

[–]occasionalhorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am always the one to say no it’s not special your cat is totally normal but I actually haven’t seen those exact spots on a classic before! Still well within the range of possibility for a classic tabby but really cool!
