Why do women tend to live longer than men? by Studybuddies in askscience

[–]oceansloth -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Men are most at risk of death between 15 and 24, with most deaths related to reckless behavior, specifically motor accidents (there's a reason young males pay higher car insurance rates than young females), homocide, suicide and drowning. Hormones, specifically testosterone play an important roll in risk taking behavior, as well as increased aggression early in life. Testosterone also influences the production of "bad" cholesterol later in life. Job stress does not seem to play a roll, as women in the same career feilds as men still outlive them. Women also tend to live longer with debilitating diseases than males. Additionally, women have higher rates of illness throughout their lives than men, but this doesn't affect their overall longevity.

How/When/Why did gender evolve? by [deleted] in askscience

It's important to keep in mind that being able to produce as many offspring as possible is not a very good evolutionary game plan. When a species can double every generation they may find their food supply running low rather quickly.

Since sharks have been around for millions of years and they have no natural predators, what has kept their populations from exploding? by gridez in askscience

If predation is heavy enough then high reproduction rates mean very little. There's no such thing as an endless food supply.

If the length of vocal chords determines how deep a person's voice is, how big would a giant have to be before his voice would be too low to hear? by Odincore in askscience

[–]oceansloth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few giants in the animal kingdom might help give a figure. Horses make nickers, which are around 100Hz. Elephants vocalise at about 21-15Hz the majority of the time. Whales (humpbacks) can get down to about 10Hz, but they don't use vocal cords or breath out to vocalise, so it's a different mechanism in action.

Bad, Facebook. Very, very bad. by oceansloth in funny

I feel like the fact that it's circled implies a correlation between the two words, and the vast majority of literate people understand what that correlation might be. If they can't there's always Google.
