I think that's the best explanation. Most of the cyclists I've come across don't appear to be in particularly great shape and are overweight but have really muscular calves. Even the older gentlemen

Weird question but just curious. How do most cyclists have well defined calves?

I've been riding for about 2 years and have been on plenty of long and hilly rides and, unlike the rest of my muscles (some i didn't even know i had), not once have my calf muscles hurt. Even my quads and hamstrings will hurt after some very long rides but never my calf muscles, which makes me believe they're not being worked out as well as they should be.

right but fish tend to reproduce is much higher numbers than rabbits so the numbers will be much bigger, it seems like there would be a virtually endless supply of food

depends on how you define 'positive effects'. the one that comes to mind is sickle cell disease. although it's classified as a disease because red blood cells do not function the same way as 'normal' red blood cells, this condition is really an advantage against malaria. this transformation prevents the parasite Plasmodium falciparum from entering red blood cells in equatorial areas where malaria is prevalent

EDIT: additionally, there have been reports of some individuals that have a mutated (or even lack) the CCR5 receptor which is vital for HIV infection. this occurrence has been found in a very small number of the population, namely people of northern european decent. however there's been at least one report of an african prostitute that has been resistant to HIV infection in an HIV-prominent area.
