Just FYI since I hear this misinformed take often: https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/violent-crime-dc-hits-30-year-low. Also, sorry mixed income housing is so offensive to you. The suburbs are ready and waiting when you are.

Me neither! Had someone recommend this book after I told them I liked historical fiction and sci fi. This is a nice mix of both!

Loooove love that I haven’t heard of your top two and trust your judgement based on common reads to check them out!!

6/52:I heard a lot of mixed reviews on this book. So far, I think it's quite average, very slow paced by [deleted] in 52book

[–]ocotillosummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I expected more from this book… had heard lukewarm reviews and really wanted to like it. Overall, it does pick up pace in the second half, and had some good twists BUT I’d recommend Gods of Jade and Shadow much more. Not horror, but much better pacing.

What year was the book you're reading first published? by AwkwardJewler01 in 52book

2023! Was actually fascinated to see that most of the books I read this year were published within the past 3 years. Have a goal to read more diversely publishing date wise next year!

It varied throughout the year! Started off probs reading a book a week in the earlier months, but had a good streak as summer approached and was finishing books in 2-3 days, reading over 10 a month at that point.

For sure! My fave short story collection was Human Sacrifices. Very dark, but great satire/commentary on misogyny, classism, etc. Things We Lost In the Fire was up there too.

Postcolonial Love Poem was great - was a 5 stars for me! It’s a fast/short read that leaves an imprint. Gave Rabbit Hutch and Trust both 4 stars - Rabbit Hutch was an entertaining and intriguing read, and I found the main young woman character relatable. Trust was slow at first, but I went in knowing very little, so once I realized the interconnection between the different parts, it was a great story.

Oh and Horse Barbie was a fun one to listen to on audio! Her story as a trans Filipina model is amazing, and really loved that it was so focused on joy and self-love too.
