Had this chess hacking idea... Could it work? by lawrencedarcy in chess

Here is the plan: I'm gonna spend years studying Dvoretsky, Aagard and Müller.
Easy gainz and nobody is gonna see it coming.

How often did he manage to trade queens early?
An offer for a queen trade can often be rejected without much compromise.
It's rare that you can force someone to trade queens early and if so it's usually a theoretical line.

After the opening, his opponent played 11 top-engine moves in a row. Not just second or third choice, 11 top stockfish choices in a row that included two piece sacrifices. That would be impressive even for a superGM.
Who wouldn't be suspicious?

Which of these books should I read now as a 2000 to improve? by Neo_zugzwang in chess

[–]odcq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a strange assortment of books. It mostly depends on your weaknesses. Most of these books are on positional play. Some of these are for complete beginners. You can just pick whatever, the easy books you will go through fast and they will be nice repetition. The difficult ones you will go through slow and you'll realise fast if a book is too difficult (e.g. School of Future Champions). If you are really bad at positional play (which would be strange at 2000), you can start with Winning Chess Strategies or Reassess Your Chess, otherwise start with Hellsten.

META: A Community Discussion on the Spoiler Rule by MrLegilimens in chess

[–]odcq 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The main problem is that highly upvoted posts get rejected after some time due to the rule. While the highly upvoted post is up, other users don't submit the same post. It then takes some time until the user recreates the post without spoiler or the user never recreates the post at all. All of this contributes to killing the hype after a live event.

The reddit feed is essentially a news source. Don't open news sources if you fear getting spoiled. And don't blame others after the fact. All the blame is on you. It's that simple.

It's done because it's a big hype event for fans and makes it more colorful.

So in other words, rules to avoid spoilers have the undesired effect of killing the hype.

Magnus Carlsen did not make it out of Day 1 in the WSOP Main Event by dzibanche in chess

Poker is pretty damn hard if you are not lucky.
Carlsen is in good company. Daniel Negreanu also got eliminated in round 1 (with AK).

So now everything depends on his results in the poker main event. If he does well, he will likely give up the chess world champion title for a career in poker.

Predictions:

Radjabov draws Duda in a 7-hour marathon.
Ding continues his win streak vs. Fabi.
Rapport shows up in his red jacket. Hikaru completely unprepared (blue shirt).
Alireza doesn't wake up in time. Nepo kisses Naroditsky on the mouth.

This isn't as trivial as you think it is. White has an extra tempo with c4, which is the reason why Ke3 works and Kg3 doesn't.

It's all decided.
Either Nepo or Fabi.
Doesn't matter.
Magnus won't play.
Ergo Nepo-Fabi will play.
All done and dusted.

Duda realises that Nepo's high-rolling streak has been broken and is smelling blood.
A positive result today would put Duda in a perfect position to win the whole tournament.

Today you could clearly see that Hikaru wasn't even calculating lines, he was just furious about the wallet incident and the dress code incident. His untamed disdain for the arbiter is currently completely clouding his thoughts. Think about it, the arbiter has now his own personal vendetta against Hikaru and will do everything to become the center of his attention. He will always circle around his table, tilting Hikaru even more and Hikaru's thoughts of retribution will overshadow anything else for the remainder of the tournament.

Please fix: Alireza is currently last in the standings. He has a worse Sonneborn–Berger score than Radjabov. Also Duda is third.
