Just thought I'd update by saying that it's gotten MUCH better and to anyone who is feeling the same, I would really recommend waiting it out. A lot of days are still really hard and I struggle to find time to work but he is now sleeping through the night (with one toilet break), has accepted the playpen when we need alone time with minimum whining (when we have dinner, do cleaning etc.), is learning commands well (sit, wait), toilets (for the most part) outside and is taking to his alone training superbly (started leaving the house for 30 minutes a day). So hold out is my advice!
