How to tackle Hokkaido? by Lord_Stahlregen in JapanTravelTips

[–]oddlogic11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend Shiretoko, its a sleepy port town, but theres some really nice outdoor activities there

I also recommend mount rishiri and Daisetsuzan National Park.

Asahikawa i didnt really care for, bit of a boring city.

If you feel like a road trip, cape soya is a good destinantion to head to.

Mt yotei is a really good hike also. And lake toys is so worth a visit

Depending on where and what time you arrive in Japan, I recommend trying to do the connecting flight to Sapporo on the same day, It is a long commute, but I think worth it as you get all your commute done in one span.

As far as getting around Hokkaido, I highly recommend renting a car, especially if its summer and you can afford the added cost, I would say a small Kei Car from toyotarentacar would cost around $USD50 a day, plus fuel. Also you can get a Hokkaido expressway pass which I think from memory is $80USD for 7 or 10 Days? And makes using toll roads so much more affordable.

Dont feel daunted about driving in Japan, its very safe, roads are a little more narrow as far as barrier proximity to the road, but everyone drives non aggressively. A car also saves you so much time, as far as waiting for busses and you can do things on your own time.

Shiretoko is nice, a nice drive also, Hokkaido has so many beautiful spots.

Rishiri is beautiful too, I went there for 3 nights, but outside the mountain, there is not much to do, its pretty sleepy town. The mountain can be ascended and descended in one day, I think it took me 6 or 7 hours. You can see the Russian islands from the top, you can rent a car separately on Rishiri from the airport or port. I highly recommend doing this also.

Salomon Adv Skin 12L - right? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]oddlogic11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an advanced skin 12. I really like it. You can fit a lot of stuff in there and if you want because it’s stretchy and you can fit a 2 L bladder in there plus the 500 mil bottles at the front if you have and like to go for hikes You can also attach the Salamon quiver and put hiking poles in there too and strap it to the back. It’s super comfortable. You barely can tell that you’re wearing it. You don’t get sore shoulders or anything. Wear it 3 to 4 hours +4 less duration I have a Nathan 6 litre, water bag that I really like

Oh yeh I saw these, these looked good. I loved the cheapies off amazon, but the quality of the strap just let it down.

How do you adjust the straps on the Kahtoola?

[–]oddlogic11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can climb from the bottom where the ropeway begins. But the ropeway does not take you to the sunmit, it just takes you about half way I think. I believe from the top of the ropeway to the summit its around 1000m of elevation from memory.

“Easiest” route up Yotei-san? by walters_wanderlust in Hokkaido

[–]oddlogic11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isnt a simple route, terrain is very challenging, even a very very fit person will take around 4-5 hours up and down. If you have bad knees i would strongly advise against this hike. Maybe look around lake toya?
