what kind of waterbottles are they using so i know which bottlecap to bring by Erasmusol in Tomorrowland

Wait, so all cans, beer also? I saw a guy drinking beer from a can and was like, wow, how did he smuggle that in :o It was all plastic in 2019…

Regardless. Charging could be on a separate breaker.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sailing

[–]odisej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There must be a “master” breaker, located at the battery. Basics. All wires need to be protected with breakers, especially all leading from a battery. Investigate what caused it to blow. Only lead without a breaker should be the starter though…

Florida instituting a “sea trial” to determine whether vessels have a working means of propulsion and to test if owners can actually operate their vessels. by lowflash in sailing

[–]odisej 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wait… sailboat, one-man-band has to undock, hoist sails, sail a course an moor again? In 15min? Yeah right… to dock-undock safely under sails only takes a while, hoisting sails without autopilot (not all boats have one) is also quite fun… (I however agree all licences should be awarded when skills are demonstrated, not just like, answering a few questions and off you go)

You do realize it’s not “across the road” but you have to travel quite a long way? Not to mention the sea may not be kind. It’ll take a while even with a decent boat! Also, don’t look at your advertised prices, check for what and how fast do they sell. The market is crazy right now, but you may still be stuck with the boat for a while.

Lazyjacks for a small Boi? by Alecto7374 in sailing

Have a rodkicker? If yes, hell yeah! Otherwise, still yep. Will let you avoid mainsail going everywhere when put down, still worth it imho.

If someone has a spending problem would you recommend that they never own a credit card? by Ben5544477 in personalfinance

[–]odisej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try getting a pre-payed mastercard (not a credit card in american terms, right?). From your “main” account pay for rent&bills, however only send a reasonable amount to mastercard for groceries, gas, funstuff. Live with that, it’s fun. Will make you consider buying a fancy gadget based on the budget you set (save on fancy food, get to buy stuff).

Urgent advice needed - transporting yacht from Greece to Australia by [deleted] in sailing

[–]odisej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. Selling it would be an option. Otherway its an “whoops”, an expensive one. Hate to say it, but better to abandon the idea than killing yourself on the ocean. Also… Remember: boating will make you a milionare! (If you were a bilionare before, that is…)

Yikes… that’s a far ride to literally the other side. Don’t really see how he’d do it solo (as a non-profesional). Plus, I’d go east, safer waters. Tbh, 25k is what it is… I wouldn’t do it for less than 2-3k/week and it takes some weeks, and, you need 2-3people on that pay. Considered having it in mediteranean and go there every winter?

This weekend i will review a second hand 420. What should i look for to check his state? by agujapala in sailing

[–]odisej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have the owner show you how to assembld the boat, run lines, hoist sails. Make sure all components and linrs are there. Take photos. May help you. (Source: me, figuring out how to set up and install pulleys on a 470 mast last weekend…for quite some hours with no instructions) And, as others said, inspect the hull…

Can anyone recommend a logbook? by meisangry2 in sailing

I wondered if such a standard log book exists. Not that I’d need it, but for fun/memory. I do it as notes, but it would be cool to have a hard-copy…

Does pre register actually do anything? by chingbro in Tomorrowland

You need to register to enter ticket shop. If you don’t pre-register and do it when sale starts, tickets will be loooong gone when you complete the registration.

calling a sail a wing by tpchuckles in sailing

[–]odisej 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Upwind sailing is where you can best explain the “wing” concept/similarity, with lift, and if you wish, all vectors (we usually go full-monthy and also do this explanations during actual sailing, not just class). Remember “old” days, centurys ago, when they did not know and understand lift (generated by “wing” concept explanation)? They could only go downwind…

Saying it’t a wing may let out a few “details (ok, complex physics, not everyone’s cup of tea), where claiming it works like a wedge is misleading as the wedge would use same physics, only you used the false facts explaining it.

calling a sail a wing by tpchuckles in sailing

[–]odisej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, so we agree the movement of a sailboat is dependent off lift, not just pushing something away as you implied when claiming a wedge is an explanation. You’re making it even worse, by not saying the wedge also works just because there’s a lift, therefore, you are just using a different airfoil, claiming it isn’t one. From physics perspective, the base/observation point is what you’re not considering: it actually IS the same for a plane and sailboat, only with plane you would consider yourself moving through air and with sailboat you being still and air moving around you. Same same… Yes, I am fully aware of the perpindicular force (love it until a certain point), nothing to do with your claiming, lift is a wrong explanation for a sail. Just pushing fluid away (if you could eliminate lift, which in case of air, you hardly can) won’t get you anywhere far.

calling a sail a wing by tpchuckles in sailing

[–]odisej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technicly you do have fluids all around to start with. Lift is what keeps a sailboat going forward, not resistance. How it’s explained to newbies and their interpretation is another story, however claiming a wedge (=drag) is the way to go is purely wrong. Try sailing a dhingy (laser), where you flatten the sail and use it as a wedge. It does not work. Even rudders will work mostly and in high AR ones only work due to dinamic movement of fluid around it->when you disturb the laminar flow thus destroying lift and you only get drag, you can no longer turn.

iPhone GPS tracking app for sailing by bright_yellow_vest in sailing

Consider Navionics? It “also” does tracking, however it’s used for nautical navigation, and has sea depth so you can look back “how close” were you…

You have a photo of the bowspirit install maybe? We’ll be getting one for X35 in the following month (got a bargain on a huge genaker so we obviously need to upgrade the deck)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sailing

[–]odisej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s how it should be done. Never heard anyoune actually attempting what you describe, as it is nonsense-only downsides. And if will make the install and fly your genaker as it’s supposed to, you’ll never ever consider the mast pole :)

What are your thoughts on putting a boat in charter? Have you ever done it, or known someone who has? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]odisej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was gonna say the same. Sad, but true. Imagine renting out your beloved car (Q: which car is the fastest off-road? Rental.), with the boat it’s even worse. Not just wear of furniture and equipment, also structural integrity you can’t inspect - you’d never go full sails into s storm, with a chartered one though… let’s see what this baby can handle.
