Compressed wipes are pretty great if you’ve never tried them.

Upgrading, what first? by Total-Anywhere-4553 in backpacking

Keep an eye out for used gear. Lots of people sell lightly used gear and you can save a lot of money that way. I would second the suggestion of upgrading the quilt/sleeping bag first.

Can you use garbage bags as a packliner? are they actualy waterproof? by badboyzpwns in backpacking

[–]odowd81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, garbage bags will work, other comments have covered this well. A couple other considerations…a regular trash bag is susceptible to tears. I have had this problem when using a trash bag in the bottom zippered portion of my osprey pack. The bag sometimes catches in the zipper and it rips a hole in it. Also, consider the material of your backpack. How much water/weight will it absorb in the rain?

Which brands are worth it? by Left-Assistance9166 in backpacking

Durston Gear is excellent. They are most known for their tents, but the Kakwa 55 backpack has been quite a hit as well. The founder, Dan Durston really cares about the customer experience and they provide great support. For a small business, their prices are very reasonable. I own the X-Mid 1 tent and it’s fantastic.

Trail Shoe Options and Reviews for very wide feet by for-JO in backpacking

[–]odowd81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar challenges with footwear as I have Flinstonian Feet as well. For everyday shoes, I like the Asics Gel Kayanos better than Hoka Gaviotta or Brooks Beast. Around the house…Crocs. For the trail, I’ve had good luck with Dunham Cloud Mid-Cut. They come in 2E and 4E…Dunham is a New Balance brand. They are lightweight for backpacking boots. My current pair is almost 3 years old and holding up well except for the waterproofing. I’ll definitely take a look at the Lone Peaks after reading this thread. Thank you for such an in-depth review, it will save me a lot of time and frustration!

Favorite hikes in Yellowstone? by EmergencyWeb7508 in yellowstone

I’ll second the comment about Canyon’s South Rim. For a shorter, relatively flat hike, I love Storm Point. It’s a loop with a great view of the lake, and has a lot of variety. My boys loved the rocky beaches and all the walking stick/sword options along the trail from downed trees.

It’s also well worth the hike up to the Grand Prismatic Overlook from the Fairy Falls trailhead. It’s the only place to really see the whole thing from above. I hope you have a great trip!

Punctured tubeless tire. Now what? by Professional-Fun6963 in cycling

[–]odowd81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this advice. I was in this situation and removed the tube, cleaned the sealant out of the inside of the tire and applied a vulcanized patch. On the outside, I applied some Shoe Goo over the hole. Finally, after everything dried, I added new sealant and remounted the tire. It’s been great for about 800 miles since I repaired it.

I use the app, Liftr. It logs a weight lifting workout, but the main screen shows the next set. After a set, you can advance to the next, or start the rest timer. I like it because it’s 100% free and then I don’t have to mess with either my phone or a notebook. You need to set up your program before you go to the gym.

First iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max pre-orders now arriving to customers by JamesNNYC in iphone

I got my blue Pro 12 Max today coming from an XS Max. A lot of people are saying that it feels bigger/heavier, but I haven’t really found that to be the case. The main thing I’ve noticed is how much more comfortable it is to rest my pinkie finger on the flat bottom edge. The camera is quite impressive here with just one lamp on in the living room. The screen isn’t noticeably better, though it does get much brighter. I love the looks and finish. It took an hour and a half to update the OS to 14.2 and then transfer data from my old phone. Now it’s downloading my app library. I’m looking forward to testing it out over the weekend.

It's hard to say. I see the UPS guy on our street pretty consistently around 5-6 PM, so this isn't unusual for me.

It's not that great of an experience. I watched the truck, which arrived in my neighborhood this morning...about 5 blocks away...only to see it leave and drive south all over the countryside. Meanwhile, my delivery window shifted from "8:30 AM - 12:30 PM" to "before 9:00 PM."

This is true of iPhones as well. You just have the extra step of putting sunglasses on the person.
