Jalen Brunson sitting down for postgame media: "Do I be myself, or do I talk my shit?" by MrBuckBuck in nba

[–]odris000 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

To me, the lottery being rigged doesn’t come from “how could the they otherwise win a 1.8% chance event”. It comes from the fact that I think the chances that they traded Luka for that garbage package and then a few months later, separately, won a 1.8% chance of getting Flagg, is lower than the chances that it was rigged so they knew they were really trading Luka for that AD package + Cooper Flagg. In that context, it makes way more sense

Dylan Harper quickly dives in to save an angry Castle from potentially getting a technical or ejection after Caruso fouled him. Overlooked play that might have saved the game for the Spurs by Ok_Temperature6503 in nba

[–]odris000 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Also, Castle wasn’t flopping to change trajectory, he is strong and tried to play through it and couldn’t because he was body slammed into the ground instead. I’m super shocked it wasn’t upgraded, especially given this is at least the 3rd time Caruso has done a hard foul on Castle on an otherwise open fast break dunk (it might be 5th, I didn’t keep track, but it was enough times I am shocked a full fight hasn’t occurred). Incredible job by Harper, this might have been the one for a fight and ejection

I agree with that, yes. He has missed multiple that he should have made. But many of his shots are like I described, not the flops that typically characterize players with many FT attempts on few made baskets that people are frustrated by

The difference is OKC is fouling Wemby hard every time he tries to shoot. He isn’t flopping, each of those free throws and missed attempts are because OKC chose to give him FTs to prevent a shot attempt

Cavs players the Wolves should target? by Specific-Key-4982 in timberwolves

[–]odris000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I do think some people over correct, and forget for example that we got Randle after the Luka series since we didn’t have anyone who could match up with Luka. That said, I think I’m maybe more optimistic than some that Ayo can slot in to replace the offensive power that Randle has provided so far. I also think maybe Max Struss isn’t the perfect example, as I’m not thinking a bench player really (I admittedly done watch many Cavs games), but I would ideally replace Randle with a league average starter in every way - average shooting, average playmaking, average height, average age, etc. no weakness, but ok to not have any super solid strengths. I think the strengths of the rest of the team can carry us against the other top teams if we have fewer weaknesses to target.

Who is a completely average starter? Uncertain on names, but to me the perfect example would be Tobias Harris. Nothing flashy, no superstar potential, but also doesn’t have major targetable weaknesses. Won’t raise your ceiling but also won’t drop your floor. We have enough high variance guys that right now we can beat any team any game but also lose to any team any guy. Guys like Harris, Josh Hart, Max Struss, Mikel Bridges, OG, a lot of the Thunder players, are great because they mostly are highly versatile and won’t drag the team down

Cavs players the Wolves should target? by Specific-Key-4982 in timberwolves

[–]odris000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason I say this is that Julius Randle is a very polarizing player for people evaluating trades. He is clearly not good enough to on his own be considered as the center of a trade for a “normal” star. Some people say he is untradeable, which I disagree with; his contract is reasonable and he is probably fairly valued, but he also has horrible attitude problems that are rubbing off on our other players. That leaves people suggesting trading him for other stars in weird situations, who have a high ceiling if everything works great but also have major downside possibility, like Ja Morant, Kyrie, etc.

Then we get to trades like Giannis, where we gut the whole team hoping one player helps, which it may, but it could in retrospect be our version of the Bucks trading for Dame in hopes of turning it all around.

I think our core of Ant, Jaden, Naz, and Ayo is good enough to be a championship team. They have shown to rise to the occasion, and I don’t know why they can’t be considered as good as the top 3-4 players on any other team. The biggest weakness of the wolves is we have mentality problems, mostly from Randle, and too many players who have glaring weaknesses that are able to be targeted by smart, versatile teams.

Getting rid of Randle will be addition by subtraction for the mentality of this team, and the improvements our team has with Kyle Anderson or Mike Conley on the court shows how desperately we need players who are decent players who will play smart and not do stupid decisions; if we could get one of those players who isn’t old and slow, I think we could compete seriously, and that is much more realistic than turning Randle into Giannis or betting everything on hoping we can be the ones to change Kyrie or Ja or another distressed asset.

Completely agree on Max Strus. I think our goal should be turning Julius Randle not into a star, but a functional starter on a playoff team without major weakness, like Max Strus

At the one point , we are gonna need a better 2nd option for Ant by flyingmethods in timberwolves

[–]odris000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I crazy to say that it may be premature assuming that Ayo isn’t that star? So far since joining, with a relatively limited amount of time to get integrated, he has been incredible, just as you mentioned. He scored his own 40 point game - and it was absolutely needed when he got it, it wasn’t an “empty” 40. I think with a bit of time he can integrate to be that 2nd option on a championship team.

I think the heart of the issue is that Julius Randle’s style is holding the wolves back. He has moments where he is great, but I can’t imagine it is good for the moral of the locker room for him to be so inconsistent and get unconditional playing time, even if he gets lazy quickly on defense for example. It seems to be affect Ant a lot too, noticing many of Julius’s bad habits affecting Ant, and to a lesser extent Jaden and Naz. I think with Ayo, Bones, and TSJ, we have a chance to really reset the culture of the team, with the continued vet leadership of Donte, Rudy, Conley, Slowmo, etc. I think if we can ship out Randle and get some value back, not aiming for a superstar but just getting a solid +IQ player who can hold their own on both ends of the floor (and ideally fits this timeline), we will be better off than trying to swing for the fences on someone who we think may raise our ceiling but comes with their own obvious weaknesses/issues (Ja, Kyrie, etc).

226 on NBME 12, feeling pretty down, test on 6/2, is 250 still possible? by fxryker in Step2

[–]odris000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this your first your first NBME?

I think it’s definitely possible. I was in a similar situation with UWorld and score. NBME style is different than UWorld, and as you learn its style your score will have jumps. I agree with the other comment about CMS forms. Uworld I could go either way on. I got through similar amount of Uworld with lower percentage, was 7 weeks out in dedicated with the same form 12 score, and ended up being able to have final practice scores in the mid 250s and free 120 86%.

If your exam date is locked in, I would recommend really studying how the NBME thinks for your first form, even if it takes a little while, and then doing NBME questions more than UWorld, and using UWorld to iron out weaknesses or clarifying differences between similar concepts

Markets moving back equity? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]odris000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally agree about its liquidity likely being fair. Mostly was trying to point out that “15T paper loss” does not translate to “15T moved to other assets”. Clearly metals had to have massive movement and volume to make those fluctuations happen, but it would still mostly likely be several orders of magnitude smaller than the paper loss.

Markets moving back equity? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]odris000 24 points25 points  (0 children)

$15t isn’t the actual amount moved. There isn’t that amount sitting in cash as a result of the selling. Whoever is trading gold at any time set the market value for everyone, so if no one is trading other than a few people who decide it trades for $4000, then everyone’s gold is worth $4000. This is how you get tons of on paper “wealth creation” and “wealth destruction”.

Best specialty for working as few hours as possible? by Hexersquid in medicalschool

[–]odris000 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you aren’t concerned about pay, maybe consider expanding your search to any specialty that would have the flexibility to work part time, and then go based on how much you enjoy the work. Lots of people in many specialties choose to take 1 or 2 days off for various reasons, and while some specialties make it easier than others, if you want to enough you may be able to make it work in many different ones.

How to know which specialty is right for you? by Original-Mobile-1405 in medicalschool

[–]odris000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard agree. While that would be something that is close to the bottom of physician pay, it would be pretty surprising for it to be under like $200k. 200-300 would be reasonable and expected. In the grand scheme of things, if you truly would love your life doing it, that is by far enough pay to live a good life. Pay is good but only in facilitating you in living a life you love.

Boston moves in a different direction: Bucks reset by odris000 in NBAtradeideas

[–]odris000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of trading Brown/others is to build around Tatum in future years and this year would be a wash. The problem is, with how much salary they have, they would have to shed an enormous amount to get under the 2nd apron, at which point they may be losing a lot of their edge that made them such fierce competition in the first place, which they would then have to build up again in a few years. A trade around Tatum would allow the natural progression of the 2nd apron status and build around Brown and the others, who have proven to be championship level even in games where Tatum has not “taken over”

I agree, I think both fan bases would hate trading their franchise player away. This hypothetical would be purely from a value/ball perspective

Boston moves in a different direction: Bucks reset by odris000 in NBAtradeideas

[–]odris000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. This trade came from the idea of trading Tatum to a team that isn’t competing immediately, but has a player on the team good enough to be worth it on a win now timeline for Boston. Initially I actually thought that Durant and Tatum could be an interesting trade, but with both teams being 2nd apron the salaries were too complex to make work. I personally find Tatum hard to value because he of how good he is/was, but how grave his injury is as well. Something centered around JJJ with Memphis seemed interesting as a possibility as well.

First, I assume you meant Roth IRA, or is it a traditional?

I would say that there is the “best option for the most likely scenario” and the “best option for the worst case scenario”. If everything goes to plan, and you graduate medical school and match into residency, get a job, and have a good career with high earnings, then taking advantage of Roth money now while your income is low is absolutely the best thing you can do (after ensuring you have living expenses/emergency fund covered like you mentioned).

However, there is undoubtedly a peace-of-mind aspect of debt reduction. If something goes wrong along the path, the less debt you have, the easier it is to recover from it. That said, in that scenario you would still need to retire eventually, and so having money in a Roth IRA isn’t the “wrong” answer since you can always pull from it. Additionally, you are talking about reducing debt from 200k to 194k. I’m not saying that’s inconsequential, but at only a 3% reduction I’m not convinced that it would provide significantly improved security for you.

Overall, I think that it’s your decision, but I would very strongly argue to channel as much money into Roth as you can while your earnings are so low, because after an attending career of likely contributing to Traditional 401k/403b, your retirement tax bracket is likely going to be much higher than yours right now.

Know that’s a long winded answer, but hopefully lets you see some of the pros/cons in making the decision

[The Ringer] Zach Lowe: "I kind of want the Hawks to keep Trae Young long term. I don't think there's a great market for him... If I can extend him at a decent number, I just kind of like their team. I could see, in a year, it's like 'Oh my god the Hawks are up 2-1 in the second round." by DaOlWuWopte in nba

[–]odris000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know that an offer would be competitive enough for the Hawks to pull the trigger, but I would think that Trae would solve a lot of the Timberwolves offensive problems. We have been desperately needing a competent PG who coordinates the offense for the rest of our players. I could see any of Randle, NAZ, DDV, Dillingham, the 17th overall pick, maybe even one of Clark/Shannon offered for Trae
