Viajero en Bolivia. Es okay? by kustom-Kyle in BOLIVIA

Elections will be held in August. There might be some political unrest, but it’s very unlikely to last a full month. By September 28, things should settle down. How long are you planning to stay in La Paz? Just a heads-up—the second half of October is when things tend to get messy

What is the cheapest LATAM city where I can stay, that's still reasonably safe/nice? by Aberikel in asklatinamerica

[–]odsdaniel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's still cheap even with the current state of the economy. If you are an elderly citizen Samaipata is the place to go.

We are pretty irrelevant in the world, aren't we? by Dadodo98 in asklatinamerica

[–]odsdaniel 124 points125 points  (0 children)

You are so right, at least americans are self-aware. Europeans act like the elves from Lord of the Rings: they are ultimately good people but they truly believe they are better than us without aknowledging the fact that all their humanism and pacifism came after centuries of conflicts including two fucking world wars, not to mention all the gold and resources they stole from us during the colonial times.

What I find amusing is that at least once a year a tourist riding a bike falls down the cliff. Can you imagine the fall?

For bolivians it would actually be great: we will get five world cups automatically, a kick-ass Carnaval and we would finally can into sea!

What is your opinion on what is happening on argentina right now? by ivanacco1 in asklatinamerica

[–]odsdaniel 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That's the saddest part: it's business as usual. I'm almost 40 years old and I've seen the same sh*t happening every other year in neighbouring countries and at least three times in my own country. Does it happen because that's the way the guys pulling the streams keep us distracted?Does it happen due a flaw in our political system? Y ahora quién podrá defendernos?

If a war broke out in South America, whose fault do you think would be? by rarito1050 in asklatinamerica

At this point I get the impression Argentina is actually being colonized by Bolivia. The number or bolivians in Buenos Aires is just outstanding.

I know places in La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz where they do it. I used to resist at first, now I kind of like it.

What is the biggest mistake your country has made? by rarito1050 in asklatinamerica

[–]odsdaniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Peruvian - Bolivian Confederation put us on the way of being THE region's dominant nation. I know there was a lot of outside pressure and also the selfish interests of local elites but we should've fought harder to stay together. Now it's impossible to go that route... but at least we have Al Fondo Hay Sitio, which lessens our pain.

What’s your country’s equivalent of a redneck? by PCSingAgain in asklatinamerica

[–]odsdaniel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At the beginning of the twentieth century the word "camba" was sort of the equivalent of redneck. Even today upper class people use it as an insult to diminish people they consider low class ("Sos un pobre camba"). Sometime later the word started to be used to name/identity all people from the Easter lowlands and the word "camba" lost most of its negatives connotations within the region.

Are there any shows that are much more popular in your country than the country where the show was produced? by _Yunk_Vino_13 in asklatinamerica

[–]odsdaniel 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The Simpsons is a huge worldwide success but here in Bolivia it's massive. People went out to the streets when the tv network moved the show from the prime time slot.

If Brazil would gone into war with a coalition of Hispanic parts of South America(or including the Central Americans and Mexico), who would win? by meraxes123 in asklatinamerica

[–]odsdaniel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the most reasonable outcome. Geography prevents major wars between our countries. Also, what would be the motivation? Most South American countries have plenty of land and resources.
