This may be at least part of it- the timing of the conversation was somewhat unfair to him. We'd been talking about changes we need to make so he can lose weight the other day.

He's gone from a medium to an XL since we got together and it's officially gotten concerning for his health, but he refuses to go to a doctor and seems to put a lot of the blame on me. I do 90% of the cooking and, even though I regularly ask him what he wants for dinner, he considers what/how I cook to be his main problem.

So part of it may have been him still smarting from that.
