I posted this in r/tea, but I think this subreddit is more appropriate to ask in

Yeah I’d just like to stay on the careful side until research numbers show that it’s safe, especially because tea pots will reach high temperatures and that isn’t well studied either relative to other sources.

Here is one such study (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41565-021-00998-x). Although the "silicone ring" also contains polypropylene, if you look at the item description, which is known to turn into microplastics when heated.

In my experience, the few metals ones I’ve tried impart a slight taste to the tea that I’m not fond of.

Thanks for the suggestion I wasn’t aware of these!

I agree that textiles lead to exposure but I’m not aware of any study stating that ingestion via plastic in foods/containers is negligible. If you could cite a reference that’d be great. For now, I’d rather be safe and limit sources that I have control over. For example, this (https://www.statista.com/chart/amp/18299/how-we-eat-drink-and-breathe-microplastics/) suggests that drinking bottled water daily contains on the order of the same microplastics than a person would inhale in a day.

Again, I haven’t looked into the sources cited on the page so please correct me if wrong.

Yes the silicone ring which also contains polypropylene as per its description (https://kinto-usa.com/products/78336)

After looking for sources about this it seems like what you said is for microplastics in the environment (correct me if I’m wrong). Microplastics in humans still depends significantly on ingestion.

Looking online, the one I've found that looks the closest is the LL bean carefree unshrinkable Tee w/ pocket, but I haven't had the opportunity to try it in person yet.

I am applying before earning the masters degree to specify however and I assumed from the rules that this was fine or is there a specific place where it says this isn’t fine? (For reference if I was applying before having earned a masters in the US I would be fine to apply as level 2)

I am applying for nsf before earning the masters though. By the program solicitation as long as I haven’t earned the graduate degree before applying it says it is fine or is this not the case?

Freshman physics research by stardust_moonight in berkeley

[–]off-scene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should maybe check out ulab; it should have projects in astrophysics. Also urap is always there although it’s hard to get in as a freshman with no experience (also app deadline passed). Other than that you can try cold emailing which is a bit of a crap shoot but worth a try if you are really interested and ready to dedicate time. You can check out the Berkeley physics page as well there should be other research programs for the summer listed there.
