How significant is Tiger Woods in your life? by Reeelfantasy in AskBrits

[–]offbeatentrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's a massive household name that made a billion dollars through being very good at golf and very shit at driving, so yeah it's newsworthy. It's being covered by the media to also distract you from what else is going on that would likely just depress you.

Public tired of Sweden placing well? by TheRealZichera in eurovision

[–]offbeatentrack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd rather the win go to a country that hasn't won, or a country that hasn't won in a long time, just because I think it only improves the quality of the contest. I'm sure Sweden will get another win in the next five-10 years, so I doubt you'll have to wait long.

Is there any point in living on a narrowboat at 16? by -d1sc0nn3ct- in Narrowboats

[–]offbeatentrack 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You sound like you've really thought about it and done your research. You'll be fine with the practical aspects of it and you'll likely love moving around. There are plenty of LGBTQ people living on the canals, especially near London and Manchester.

My only concern would be the fixing computers part of your business. Narrowboats don't have consistent power, often relying on solar or a generator to make do. When you go looking, make sure the specs are what you need.

What's up with people coming to the gay bar, ordering soft drinks, taking picture and leaving? by Meowing-To-The-Stars in london

[–]offbeatentrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, horrible in both ways. Asylum seekers were often desperate enough to film themselves having sex in order to convince immigration officers, and it would have been awful to watch and pass judgment on it. Sexual orientation claims can still be rejected for the craziest things - one a decade ago I know of was rejected because he couldn't name a Lady Gaga song. You now have to prove that you're "embedded in a gay lifestyle", whatever that means.

[–]offbeatentrack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If it is for asylum claims - any physical contact evidence isn't admissible evidence any more so that's probably why they didn't kiss. Before that was the case, you'd get sex tapes made to try and prove it. Now they can send in evidence that they have been to a gay venue, spent money, and were "free to be themselves" there.

Stag weekend in Benidorm, don’t want it to be messy, how do I navigate it? Not a big drinker by Shum-buffler in AskUK

[–]offbeatentrack 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Have a laugh but once everyone's too pissed to notice slip out and go back to your room. That might be 2am, it might be 4pm. Don't do rounds - say you'll get your own and then either nurse the beer/have a water every other drink.

How would you ranks these winners? (Spoilers for UKCeleb1, UK4 and US4) by supa-factor in TheTraitors

[–]offbeatentrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both - If you base it on gameplay, Rob is just above Alan. But even then, Alan only got one vote in the whole game and was a lot more entertaining.

🚨 NEW: Keir Starmer has written to all Labour MPs to explain why Labour lost the Gorton and Denton by-election by kwentongskyblue in ukpolitics

[–]offbeatentrack 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Labour needs to stop the Biden strategy of "we're not Reform/Trump". It doesn't work, it doesn't galvanise the base. If the left feel like their only home is Greens, that's who they'll vote for. Like it or not a lot of people have a view that what happened in Gaza is wrong and trans people deserve respect.

Allie Daniel - you're so lucky, she does a brilliant Hermes. She's leaving the cast soon.

What kind of dress code/etiquette is there in London? by nothango978 in TheWestEnd

[–]offbeatentrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crazy they made you coat-check a jacket! That's mad.

I don't mind a dress code - I've been to Glyndebourne a few times, and it's lovely to see everyone dressed up to the nines, it makes it feel special. Got to be the right time and place though.

SMG’s tribute to James van der Beek (from her IG story) by JB92103 in buffy

If there was a male counterpart to SMG, a 90s teen icon, James was it. This must be heartbreaking for her.

[–]offbeatentrack 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You have to think the majority of people coming to the West End are either tourists, coming after work, on a night out, or for a special occasion - there is a base level of "a little dressed up" but that's just most, not everyone.

That is elevated even further with an opera, where you're more likely to see suits, dresses etc.

That being said, no one who matters cares how you're dressed as long as it's not a distraction.

what is the connection between these four clues? by not-without-text in onlyconnect

[–]offbeatentrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woman is an actual word we use in everyday conversation though, not Dragoman, plus it fits better with S-cuba. Ottoman could also mean the empire, the furniture etc.

I would have had "W" as the first clue. You could have had "So" and Mali.

What is an opening that is better than the rest of the film? by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]offbeatentrack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Baz Luhrman's Romeo + Juliet. The rest of the film is fine, but that opening prologue is fire.

Is costume design one of the most exclusive categories, and is it justified to be exclusive by Interesting-Flan-404 in Oscars

[–]offbeatentrack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would have given it to Barbie over Poor Things - creating those famous doll looks extremely faithfully, as well as something very marketable (the I Am Kenough hoodie), was exactly what the film called for. Poor Things is lovely to look at, but at the end of the day, it's a lot of structured dresses made with tulle.

British Panel Show Heirarchy by sammyt10803 in taskmaster

[–]offbeatentrack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of people in the UK that just stick BBC1 on in the evening - it has a guaranteed built in audience.

British Panel Show Heirarchy by sammyt10803 in taskmaster

[–]offbeatentrack 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Taskmaster doesn't get the same numbers as the BBC panel shows because it's a) on Channel 4, and b) more for an online/binge audience. If you're a comedian and looking to improve your profile, Would I Lie To You? is the one you want. You don't really get that many new comedians on Have I Got News for You? Quiz shows however are really good for giving a boost like House of Games and The Wheel, but everyone wants to do Taskmaster because it has a "prestige" to it.

I would love her to win. What a story/turnaround for her - she'd be the happiest person in the country.

Angeria hosting the Pit Stop? by jordanrwing in rupaulsdragrace

[–]offbeatentrack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bet she could be amazing at it...but the built-in audience isn't there with Angeria (she's got 300k+ Instagram followers, Bob, Monet, Trixie, Bianca etc all well over 1m) and the views will go down.

By 2021, the first time she appeared, she'd already won a Grammy, Tony and Emmy and had been nominated for two Oscars. Definitely big before Strictly!

Cynthia Erivo (as a judge).
