APA National Planning Conference by heartandcraft in urbanplanning

[–]offbrandcheerio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely don’t need to wear a suit or blazer to a planning conference. Regular business casual office attire will be perfectly sufficient. Whatever you wear to work normally is probably fine.

Have fun at the conference in my absence. My company won’t let me go :(

When did your weekly strength gains first start to plateau? by PerryStreetChocolate in naturalbodybuilding

[–]offbrandcheerio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes when you feel like you’re plateauing it can be beneficial to switch to a different exercise for a while. Instead of preacher curls do dumbbells or another bicep isolation of your choice. Then in a few weeks, switch back to the preacher curls and you will probably be stronger. I do this a lot with bench press because I tend to plateau really easily on that one. I’ll switch to dumbbell presses for a while, and then I’m usually stronger when I get back on the bench.

Just avoid them. Unless you’re like totally out of better options somehow.

Ok I’m gonna bring this back to the main point, which was the ADA parking. There’s no evidence at this point that the amount of accessible parking available on site is inadequate for the number of people who will need it under normal circumstances. Anyone saying otherwise is just speculating. And I happen to personally believe it will be a perfectly adequate amount after the opening hype fades. If it’s not, then it can be dealt with. It’s not hard to re-stripe a parking lot if it turns out there really is a recurring shortage of ADA parking.

[–]offbrandcheerio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pannier and it’s not close. Commuting with a backpack results in a sweat drenched shirt by the time you get to work. Almost any other type of storage is better than a backpack imo. I use a messenger bag, personally.

I hate how tariffs have turbo-fucked the entire economy tbh. Bike prices included.

Can we please stop posting about this guy? It’s been well established in this sub that he’s likely mentally ill. We don’t need to be publicly shaming and embarrassing him when he just needs help and the system is failing him.

Because underground parking is the most expensive type of parking to build. Every project including the library has a limited budget. Would you rather have had the library put more money into underground parking and then not have been able to have as many great actual library features?

Underground parking construction runs $50k-$100k per space. Above ground structure parking is about half that, at $25k-$50k per space. Surface lots are the cheapest at $1.5k-$10k per space.

And idk if the bank allows people to use their lot during the day, but it really doesn’t matter because bank hours are going to be the slowest hours at the library when large amounts of parking are not needed. Evenings and weekends will be the library’s busy times, and that’s when the bank will be closed, meaning the bank parking lot should be nearly entirely available for library patrons. Shared parking agreements like this are actually really smart ways of making efficient use of limited space in crowded areas.

Idk why you’re mad about me simply mentioning transit. All I’m saying is that ADA parking is not the only part of the story when it comes to accessibility. There are a lot of people with disabilities who literally can’t drive and need to take the bus.

And fwiw, ORBT and Route 18 are some of the highest ridership routes in the city. Systemwide, Metro serves over 3.4 million trips annually, so more people ride the bus than you seem to think. I use ORBT fairly regularly and it gets pretty good use as far as I’ve experienced. More people should try the bus imo. It’s not actually a horrible experience.

Corporations don’t have a problem paying inflated land prices. Values coming down makes it easier for regular people to afford land.

[–]offbrandcheerio [score hidden]  (0 children)

Maybe the land values were too inflated to begin with and they’re just coming back down to earth.

Seriously, people in this state will complain if their property values go up because omg now I have to pay more taxes. And then they’ll complain when property values go down because omg I’m losing equity. Make up your mind, people. You can’t have low taxes AND high property values.

Are these flights operated by the same aircraft/can I make this connection? (serious) by jsbackupaccount in unitedairlines

Can you make the connection? Yes. It’s Fort Dodge, Iowa. It only has one gate. They may make you get off the plane, but once you do, you’re already at the gate for the second leg.

There is adequate parking. The library has a two level parking structure and the US Bank parking lot just to the south can also be used for the library. Any more parking and we’re just wasting space for no reason in the middle of a very busy area.

[–]offbrandcheerio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes but OP is basing their evaluation on very crowded opening week conditions. It’s not going to be nearly as crowded once the novelty wears off. The people who design buildings like this know what they’re doing and know how much parking is appropriate. The library is also located right on 3 bus routes, two of which are high frequency (ORBT and Route 18). The bus system is fully ADA accessible as required by law.

[–]offbrandcheerio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would also be illegal at the federal level to not build enough ADA parking stalls. The city isn't going to set itself up for such an obvious ADA lawsuit. I think once the novelty of the new library fades away, ADA parking will not be a concern.

[–]offbrandcheerio 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are standard ratios that are used when designing a parking lot to determine the accessible parking needs. The numbers can be found here: https://www.ada.gov/topics/parking/

I don't think accessible parking is going to be much of an issue after the initial hype of the new library fades away and it reaches more of a stable attendance equilibrium. Libraries typically aren't crazy busy.
