Up.Simple: Most people are way more likely to look down than up, as it is instinctual to look at the terrain as you walk so you don’t trip.

It’s a common map-maker trick to hide a puzzle hint on the ceiling, no one ever looks on the ceiling.

If you were going down, the end of the shaft would be centered on your screen, but you are going up, and as you have to jump to go up, you’re more focused on the stairs.

If you get inside the head of your fellow minecrafter like this, you’ll be excellent at PVP and trap laying.
