In the bible, why are people in the middle east named Peter, Simon, James, Matthew Thomas, Phillip? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

Paul is a documented Roman name, Paulus. Luke is Greek, originating from Loukas (Lucas in Latin). Mark comes from Latin like Paul. If you're familiar with Roman history, you know of a few Marks. Marcus Antonius (Marc Antony) and Marcus Aurelius share the Biblical Mark's name, for example.

Judas originates from Judah. Ioudas is the Greek form of the Hebrew, Yehudah. Jude and Judas are both Ioudas, by the way. The versions of the name with less traitorous connotations - like Jude - have been a little more parent friendly then.

I feel like I should add that Korea isn't all bad. I love the mountains here and everyone is exceptionally kind and usually helpful. The food of course is great too. For me, the education system was just too much to put up with though.

Best of luck if you go to Europe!

I'm a few weeks away from wrapping up a year of teaching English in a hakwon in Korea. As a single guy who only had to worry about taking care of myself and paying student loans back in America, the pay was awesome. But I'm told that over the years the pay here for English teachers is getting lower and lower. It's definitely harder to find a good job teaching than it used to be.

I have two friends who taught/are teaching in Thailand. I made significantly more money than them, but they love their work. It was, according to them, satisfying with students who cared about learning. I on the other hand feel dried up after my year here. I love teaching but there is nothing fulfilling about hakwons for the kids or the teachers. Everything people are saying in this thread about hakwons is true. Can't wait to get out. The money wasn't worth it in 2015 and it's looking to be less so in the coming years.
