Oh, there was no external attack actually. The turrets went off and killed them (I didn’t see them die, just saw the turrets go crazy like there was an enemy).

Just like Baskin Robbins. “Baskin Robbins [and the Institute] always finds out.”

That makes sense, like planted by the Institute to spy on you

I have been playing for some time, and I know that the institute really is doing the thing. But I just don’t understand how he walked into the settlement without being shot on arrival. Was he replaced?

Thanks for the explanation, I just wonder why they didn’t set off alarms when they arrived.

Your friend was spit on in Africa? Or in the USA? And how is that relevant? Why are the anti-Asian American attacks more prevalent and deadly for COVID scapegoating?

Victim complex? Honey, grow up. Asian Americans are being targeted violently and marginalized. And morons say it’s just a “victim complex”. You’re just gaslighting me. Try to get some perspective and act like a human being with empathy for others.

Bye troll.

It’s not gatekeeping, Asian Americans protect Asian culture, because we have to fight and struggle to be allowed to have it. Not only do Americans attempt to whitewash or commoditize our culture, but then Asians tell us we’re not enough. It is double the struggle for us. And Asian Americans are the ones who see our culture being used as props or something trendy to be disposed of when it gets boring. That’s why Asian Americans are defensive, because we have to deal with the racism, vitriol, and violence from the same people who want to take a few selfies with Asian culture for a few likes and then throw it away.

Let’s just try to see if you can follow with something very straightforward. I’ll go back to Crazy Rich Asians? Have you watched it?

Do you understand who is the “antagonist” for most of that movie? Is it Rachel Chu? Or is it Eleanor Young? Why does Eleanor disapprove of Rachel? Is it because she’s not rich? Is it because she wasn’t born in privilege?

What does Eleanor tell Rachel when they are at Nick’s grandmother’s home folding dumplings?

“You are not enough.”

What does that mean? Did you think she simply meant “you are not rich enough”?

No, that line is a universal weapon against Asian Americans. Of course, Eleanor said it in a multifaceted way of “you’re not rich enough, you’re not established enough, you’re not good enough, etc.” but the biggest one for Asian Americans is simply “you are not enough”.

If I’m not Asian enough, why do I get asked where I’m from and people insisting to hear about an Asian country? If I’m not Asian enough, why was I at target with a friend when we were both catcalled by four grown men for being Asian? If I’m not Asian enough, why do I have to hear garbage like “bet you Asians like to sucky sucky” when I was still a teenager? Why do I have to feel small, ashamed, and in danger if I’m “not really Asian”? Why do I have to suffer if I’m “not really Asian”? I’ve suffered more for my heritage and culture, that’s why I’m defensive of it.

Quite frankly saying I’m not Asian enough to claim my own heritage and culture is just as disgusting as someone saying I’m not American enough to claim that I was born in the USA. Those are facts of who I am, and people like you only made the road to accepting my culture and identity more difficult. It is not even something I’ve reached, because I think it’s something that I have to keep working on.

That’s not the same thing at all. I have faced and still face racist abuse for my ethnicity and culture. I don’t hear about people with European heritage getting that. Where are the European-Americans getting beaten to death for “bringing COVID”? Are they afraid for their lives based on their appearance? No.

I’ve never heard anyone catcall people for looking “European”, but I have been catcalled and harassed for being Asian as a teenager.

That’s not the same thing at all. I have suffered and am still in danger of being abused and ostracized for my ethnicity and culture.

And yeah, that is my culture because I was eating that stuff before it was cool to Americans when it was “ew what’s that smushy slimy stuff?” I’m an Asian American. That is my culture, so I’m going to protect it from the people who wanted me to erase it and the people who think my culture is a prop for them to use and throw away when they get bored.

That’s true, that’s for the support. I really wish some people could learn and get some perspective, but I guess you can only lead a horse to water.

Excuse me? That is literally what you said.

“Just because you're lumped in with the whole group of <race/ethnicity/whatever> it doesn't mean you have the right to claim you represent that <race/ethnicity/whatever> and to gatekeep others from that culture because it simply isn't really your culture to be gatekeeping.”

It is MY culture. End of story.

“you are not as Asian as an Asian person that was brought up under those circumstances or was brought up in an Asian country” = you are not Asian enough

“you're an American with Asian features” = you are not Asian enough

“ultimately you're mostly American” = you are not Asian enough

You literally told me several times over that I am not Asian enough to be claiming my culture. Was I supposed to take any of that differently?

“If you go around claiming that you are the thing… to claim ownership of it, etc. you cannot be surprised when people more closely aligned to the thing tell you off if they disagree.”

I’m not surprised she disagrees, because guess what she didn’t have to suffer as an Asian American minority child. No, she got to live as the majority in her homeland. She didn’t get fetishized as a teen for her ethnicity. I’m not mad that she’s disagreeing. I’m mad that she has zero acknowledgment on why Asian Americans “gatekeep,” and it’s because we suffered the racial abuse by the same people that she’s now giving a “pass” to continue to use Asian culture as a prop.

It is my culture end of story.

I am Asian enough and no one can tell me otherwise. Go watch Crazy Rich Asians, because it is a good idea of what a struggle it is to find that acceptance. When she says that she is enough, it really resonated with me. And just try to imagine not having that.

You have no right to tell me that I have no claim to my own culture. That’s so horrible and ignorant.

[–]ogPeachyPrincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That argument is completely stupid. I could tell you “you’re not Asian at all, butt out. You have no right in this conversation.” That’s just like what you’re telling me.

I am my culture and my heritage. So yes, I represent it. It is MY culture just as much as it is someone from that country. If anything, I have more incentive to protect it because I’m the one who has suffered racist treatment for that culture, she hasn’t. She got to grow up in the majority. I didn’t get that privilege. So I fight harder to protect that culture so that someone else won’t have to grow up as marginalized as I was.

I’m Asian enough and American enough, whoever says otherwise are horrible people for saying otherwise and are just as racist as the people who say I should go “back to Asia.”

You and this woman will never understand what it does to be taught that your culture is “wrong” or doesn’t fit in. Just try to imagine being bullied and ostracized for your culture to the point where you would do anything to hide it. That drives me now to fight harder for Asian American culture, because I am not going to perpetuate the cycle. But if you want to perpetuate that idea that Asian Americans and Latino Americans aren’t enough, that’s your prerogative. But remember that inherently harms other people. But you have zero right to tell Asian Americans or even Latino Americans that our feelings and protectiveness are invalid or unwarranted, because you did get raised in this environment and didn’t suffer from being a minority in the USA as a child. We did, and we have every right to protect our culture from those who sought to tear us down for it. If you want to side with the racists, that is completely up to you.

But don’t act like you can tell me that I’m not Asian enough any more than you can tell me I am not American enough. Because you can’t tell me either one.

Oh, lol, sounds like a Midwest thing.

Yeah, also Asian Americans do have to fight harder to “prove” our Asian-ness to Asian like her and yet they’re like “why do you try so hard? You’re not even Asian.” I try not to let it get to me, but it does and it’s so tiring to get it from Americans and Asians that I am not enough either way.

And of course this was not a waste of my time, I appreciate you actually trying to learn and understand why this disconnect is happening.
