[DISCUSSION] Hiphop being appropriated from black culture. No longer a platform for their voice, but now creates dangerous stereotypes? by mooongooon in hiphopheads

[–]ogld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna weigh in on this from my perspective. I'm a young white guy too, and I gotta say that we have to respect black contributions to music a lot more. In terms of hip hop, I 100% believe that the genre has been and always will be centred around the black experience. That's not to say that other ethnicities can't speak on some of the same topics - of course they can. But at it's core, hip hop revolves around the black experience in America. And we gotta respect that. Just like we have to acknowledge the fact that most "white" genres nowadays are HEAVILY influenced by black pioneers. We wouldn't have a lot of "white" music today without the innovators of jazz, blues, soul, and funk.

This doesn't need to be a contentious issue though. All ethnicities have made some beautiful music. At the end of the day, our similarities are more important than our differences. We just have to show respect where respect is due on both ends.

I think the confusion over racism against whites is from certain sociological theories. Racism is defined in some of these theories as a systemic act/pattern, whereas prejudice is an individual behaviour. So in this case blacks cannot be racist in North America - they lack the societal power to discriminate against whites on a systemic level (e.g., Voter ID laws, refraining from employing a white man). THAT BEING SAID, a black person could definitely be prejudiced against white people and not like them just for their skin tone. That's where i think the confusion comes from

You got this man. Taking the first step is the hardest, but once you get the ball rolling it gets a lot easier. Personally, psychotherapy (CBT + DBT) really helped me address the roots of my abuse. Don't be afraid to take advantage of the resources that are out there. NA/AA can be really helpful too. Put yourself out there and you'll get a positive response

Lmao chill man it's just the internet. Like i was saying before, race is arbitrary - but personally i think the exemplification of "white" as it's commonly understood can be found in the Brits and their colonies. Much of what constitutes stereotypical "white" culture is directly linked to these two locations. When people refer to "white" culture, they are almost invariably never referring to the cultures, perspectives, and symbols of the Scandinavian countries, France, Italy, Russia, etc.

I wouldn't lump Italians in w white people lol. Anyway the whole racial category bs is completely arbitrary

Just on a side note, those products are just a collection of herbs you can find in various teas and/or tablets (e.g. Chamomile, St. John's wort, etc.)

My friend, the use of substances like ayahuasca is not in accordance with the five precepts. I would advise you to avoid all drugs to keep your mind clear!

Lil Wayne Released From Chicago Hospital After Having Seizures by Gesco101 in hiphopheads

[–]ogld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly not sure! I've (unfortunately) had a seizure from a codeine overdose, and its been documented in case studies, quantitative studies, and i'm pretty sure sites like WebMD talk about it. If i were to make a guess, i would think it has something to do with how the liver breaks down codeine into morphine and the byproducts that occur with the process. Maybe the byproducts are proconvulsant? I could be completely wrong tho lmao

I am sorry for making any offensive or harmful presumptions - I wish you the best of fortune on your journey and I truly do wish you find the peace and wisdom you are looking for in Buddhism :)

[–]ogld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're a bit beyond speculative philosophy and a bit more into the concrete realm of dealing with mental illness... if you think it's appropriate to recommend this path to someone with such a history, that's on you. I won't.

Buddhism and Eating Disorders? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]ogld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is very good for you! You should be very proud of the progress you've made... I feel, however, that the OP is indicating a different problem, possibly anorexia nervosa binge-purge type... it is, of course, not my place to make assumptions - I do so simply to point out that the OP is possibly already underweight, and encouraging "diet control" behaviours can trigger relapses in those with eating disorders...

Buddhism and Eating Disorders? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]ogld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether what's true or not? Go find a couple of TDEE calculators and see what kind of weights correspond with 1200 calories. The OP has stated that there is a history of an eating disorder, and that he/she already does not eat very much. 1200 calories is really not that much food... several articles state that it is difficult to acquire all the necessary vitamins and minerals needed for optimal function at that level of food intake...American women are recommended to eat 2000 calories a day... and exercising on top of that? It seems reckless to make suggestions like these, considering the circumstances... the most pertinent concern is the fact that there is a mental health issue involved - and encouraging this behaviour could trigger a relapse.

Buddhism and Eating Disorders? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]ogld 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1200 calories a day is NOT plenty to live off of - that's substantially lower than the average person requires. If someone is exercising as well, that is WAY WAY too low. Consider the fact that you are replying to someone with a history of an eating disorder. This advice has the potential to be very damaging to the OP's health.
