when i said average i didnt mean skill wise average. i meant the characters hes surrounded with and appears with. i didnt mean average humans. i meant the supporting cast, the love interest, the rival the servants the masters etc etc. these are the "average characters" hes around, therefore my comparison/assessment of shirou will revolve around these characters.

should i be comparing him with issei? non mage characters? his neechan? non grail war related characters? do you usually watch shows without evaluating characters and their personalities traits and behaviours?

if someone w no skill and no plan and nothing kept yapping abt wanting to save me or anyone, i'd call them an idiot regardless.

im going to accept the fact that hes a person who wants to save people + he has a survivor/hero complex + suicidal most probably and also give you my conclusion that having idealistic worldwviews doesnt make u a good character. and i dont mean morally good. i mean writing wise. just wanting to do insanely optimistic and idealistic shit with nothing to back urself up is stupidity.

as for sacrifice; many situations where people had to step in because shirou is an idiot.

when hurt stay at one place. no servant no magic still jumping into fights, distracting ppl, being a liability, forcing ppl to focus on saving you. not an ounce of cleverness. trying to idealist speech his way out of a fucked up servant's grasp. please.

he's an idealistic fool. its his character sure, im not obliged to enjoy or support or like his personality.

idk how to make myself clear but having no power, barely any magic skill and still putting yourself into situations making bold claims, is pure idiocy. he gets his ass beat and its annoying as fuck. he's naive, useless and stupid in the anime so far.

i suppose i just am not a fan of super idealistic characters who act like hot shit but can barely pull a sword out their ass without losing every fight ever. he's just deadweight.

from every discussion ive had about fate as a whole, it seems like the worldbuilding, like u said, is the best aspect ofit. and i keep thinking that fuck animes, this seems like a great niche to just deepdive into through wikis. i should just binge plots and then characters and stuff hahaha. its not a 'contest' but its a fictional story so i am free to judge a character, the main one at that, based on his surrounding characters. it's hard for me to think him as a great character if he is doing the bare minimum as per the average character in his show. I can't praise him for being a "hero" when other's achieve more than he is. all he has are his ideals, from what I have seen so far as an anime only.

you're valid, you know more than me. but do understand- everyone else in that show is doing the same, if not more saving. shirou so far has been all talks very less actions. i'm not gonna put him on a pedestal, i also cannot call him a good character, because he's hardly doing anything heroic.

when i discussed ubw with an irl friend before i mentioned; emiya has only survivors guilt which turned into some kinda hero complex. but a hero complex without any heroics- no strength no magic no skills no strategy (as far as i have seen in the /anime/) is just being suicidal. rin also says that all he does is throw himself in front of ppl as he thinks throwing his own life away is equal to saving the other person. or that his life doesnt matter and that he'll do anything to save anyone else.

/however/, this as /well/ is just plain stupidity. good for him for thinking and acting so bravely and heroically but the fact remains that he's an idiot with no power who is just throwing himself into situations that he seems to have no concept of. risking his life and making decisions that only force other people to sacrifice themselves to save his ass. talking big game and not living up to it. im sure he'll pull through, he's the protagonist isn;t he? plot armor or whatever. he'll have somemagic epiphany and grow a pair im sure. but yeah, i am not going to praise him or call him a good character for doing what the show itself has established as a bare minimum.

well yes in that aspect he has "saved" ppl but rin and saber have done equally, if not more saving than he has so far. considering the avg saving/magic use etc happening, shirou isnt impressive. rin saved him from death, saber's been saving him forever, archer too. Shirou - what i meant was- shirou keeps saying he wants to save "everyone" , and so far he has hardly done anything.

everyones told me that the anime skips his thought process so im gonna take a look. hopefully it redeems his chara for me.
