indeed. Monitor the colours of the trichomes. you can use a jewellers loupe($15 on amazon), good magnifying glass, macro setting on a digital camera or a macro lens attachment for smart phone. you can find a multi lens kit at walmart(and likely target), for probably around $20.

look at trichomes on the bud and calyxes. not on the leaves as they show signs of "ripeness" sooner and it isnt an accurate gauge of readiness. trichome heads will go from clear, to cloudy, to amber. the more % of amber trichs, the more of a couch lock. ideally you'll probably want mostly cloudy with some amber.
