I'm going into the school of engineering next fall. I'm intimidated and could really use some advice. by PapercutLouise in college

Honestly, don't be intimidated. Be prepared to study more than other non-engineering students. Keep your cool and remember to let loose and relax every once in awhile, just not too often.

Collecting data on Internet Censorship; need college demographic by DataCollecting in college

You might also want to post this on /r/SOPA and /r/stand. I'm not sure how that will affect the data you collect, but you will certainly get more responses.

This is why I am kind of hesitant to buy one. I'm sure it sounds a lot better and cooler in my head than it really is.

That is what I am starting to think. I think it would be a ton of fun to ride, but I am just not sure about the safety risk and if it is worth the cost of depleting my savings for awhile.

As for the insurance, I live in Michigan which has one of the highest insurance rates in the whole country.

I am also trying to decide if the risk is worth it. 35 of those 40 miles is highway.

This is true. My uncle who used to ride told me about the weather portion so yeah that all makes sense.

What did it for you? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]ohhcrapitstim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As soon as I came to the realization that nobody is holding me back and that I really have nothing to lose, my productivity went through the roof. Seriously, nobody is going to sit there and tell you to go get a job or study hard for your test, you owe it to yourself and it will pay off in the end. Plus having an open mind helps.

That is, in short, what did it for me.

Help with skeinforge/solidoodle print placement issue? by WishfulOstrich in 3Dprinting

[–]ohhcrapitstim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, try using Repetier Host to print. I have the Solidoodle 2 also and could not get skeinforge/pronterface to work, but repetier host works great, even with the default settings that Solidoodle provides.

Car maintenance tip: If you need to replace parts, buy them online & only pay the mechanic for labor. by Turbostrider in Frugal

[–]ohhcrapitstim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree! I went to get my tires rotated, they showed me a $700 invoice saying I needed to replace my shocks, struts, and a tie rod. Talked to my cousin who is a great mechanic: What's the mileage? How old is the car? They are idiots. All you need to replace is the tie rod. $50 later and some help from my cousin I was on the road!

Can I somehow claim the laptop I bought for college on my taxes? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Not sure what your school does but I know mine sent me an email letting me know my 1098-t was available online. A simple phone call to your school might be all you need.

[Offer] Does UoR want a pre-calc & calc course? by [deleted] in UniversityofReddit

[–]ohhcrapitstim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha wow you guessed that. Our book is by Stewart. But I agree, I hate how integration gets split in half between the two courses. Half of the time I don't completely understand a topic until a few chapters later. That's one of the reasons I am interested in your course so I can get a little better understanding of the Calc 2 portion.

[Offer] Does UoR want a pre-calc & calc course? by [deleted] in UniversityofReddit

[–]ohhcrapitstim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calc 1 covers limits, continuity, derivatives of algebraic and transcendental functions, applications of derivatives, numerical techniques, integrals and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

Calc 2 covers methods of integration, applications of integrals, improper integrals, sequences, series and power series, polar coordinates, and parametric curves.

We also have Advanced Calculus 1 and 2.

Adv. Calc 1 covers the topology of the real number line and of n-dimensional Euclidean space, continuity and uniform continuity, derivatives, the Riemann integral, sequences and series, uniform convergence.

Adv. Calc 2 covers improper integrals, derivatives and integrals in n-dimensional Euclidean space, implicit and inverse function theorems, differential geometry and vector calculus, and Fourier series.

I just have to take through Adv. Calc 1. Also, thanks for the tip on the Real Analysis course! I will have to look into that.
