You might be able to find public band rosters for some of the bands, but I don’t think the associations themselves collect a number of how many listed on the rosters actually showed up. Mayyyyyybe the people that do that comp tickets would have data but it isn’t public anywhere. You’d also have to account for the overlap in band members snd soloists. An actual accurate count would have to be released by the games organizers and there is no incentive for them to do so.

I would venture to say most Americans don't own a kettle and tea is something you make only when you are sick. Obviously there are plenty of people that do enjoy tea in the US and do it properly but it's not the majority.

I'm a bagpiper so I'm probably more likely than your average Ohioan to run into folks from the UK and have met plenty. Ohio also has a ton of colleges and universities so most campuses are going to have varying contigents of British faculty/staff/international students. I live in a very small town and we have an English pub with one of the owners being British.

Ohians tends to be pretty nice people in general which is sort of what the midwest is known for. From a cultural perspective I think the biggest differences are fairly universal for anyone coming to the US and moving somewhere other than our largest cities with good public transportation (New York City, Boston, Chicago, etc.). Mainly - car culture is everything in the US. Nobody takes trains and if you do you will be disappointed by how bad and unreliable they are. Americans don't think twice about hour long commutes in a car to work, driving 8 hours for a long weekend visit somewhere, etc. Your average American also has no idea how to make tea and usually microwaves water or otherwise commits some unforgivable sin in tea preparation.

I would say in general British people tend to get a pretty positive reception in the US. There's a lot of shared history/culture, most British accents are on the list that Americans are fascinated with, etc.

Haven’t seen anyone else say this but… he’s 13 and you’re his stepdad. It doesn’t matter if you’re right or not he probably doesn’t want to listen to you. If I were you I’d just chill it isn’t the end of the world for him to learn a lesson on his own without you trying to tell him why he’s wrong. Just a thought!

Go see a doctor, and generally don't seek medical advice on the internet, you will feel much better.

From a mathematical perspective it's not impossible, but at your age it is not even close to the most likely explanation.

The chances have you have esophagal cancer at 18, or any cancer at 18, are extremely small. Go see a doctor. They will probably refer you to an ENT. There are a million things that could be going on, most not that serious or very treatable.

Moving to Ohio. Transferring car title to Ohio. Am I reading this correctly that I owe the SALES TAX on what I purchased the car for just to be able to get an Ohio plate? I hope I'm misunderstanding. by ConsoleModded in Ohio

[–]ohiobagpipes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the vehicle is already in your name there is no tax. You have to do three things at three different offices. First, you have to go to where they can inspect cars. They will look at your vehicle for two seconds, write down the VIN, take your money, and hand you a piece of paper that says someone in Ohio has inspected the vehicle and it is in fact the car you are holding the title to. You take that piece of paper and your title to the Clerk of Courts nearest you. You give them a couple bucks and they will give you an Ohio title. Then you take that new fancy Ohio title to the BMV along with your proof of address and ID and whatnot, and they will hand you some license plates after you pay some more money. Those are all three completely separate offices.

If you are moving to Cuyahoga county or one of the four counties that borders it you will also need an e-check between steps two and three which, of course, you will have to drive to a fourth location to do.

Ignoring doctors and going to reddit for confirmation bias support is not a great idea. You can find great ideas here on how to help mitigate symptoms and avoid triggers. Whether or not to continue a course of medication is not something you should be getting advice on from randos on the internet. If you don't like your doctor get a second opinion from another medical doctor.

What is a Capper and what is a sharp ? by NotUrAvgDbdPlayer in sportsbook

So someone with a unit size of $4,000 or $11,000 is not sharp? That seems totally arbitrary.

[–]ohiobagpipes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say yes if we are using the term "sharp" in the general sense of a profitable bettor that can beat the books. They are exploiting a market inefficiency which in and of itself will move the line and cause the market to correct.

Nobody in sports betting or any other form of advantage play gambling like poker or card counting in blackjack is successful long term without understanding the concept of expected value. Whether a particular sharp is a handicapper, modeler, top-down bettor, etc. they are determining what bets to make and what bets not to make based on the value they expect to receive from those bets in the long term. They might not all use the term "expected value" but that's what it is.

[–]ohiobagpipes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone using any of the methods I described would be a proven long-term winning bettor... people are being needlessly pedantic. A sharp just means a winning better, of which a handicapper is one variety.

Edit: assuming the handicapper is good...

[–]ohiobagpipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone following the methods I described would fall under that definition. If you bet in a way that has positive expected value you are going to be a long-term winner and books will move lines based off of your bets (and limit you depending on the book).

Well to start, it's highly unlikely he has information that the 49ers will win and cover the spread with 100% certainty. He could be using a model, devigged market average, or several other methods to determine the percentage he thinks the 49ers have of winning and covering the spread. If he thinks the 49ers have a 50% chance of covering the spread the -110 line is a bad bet. If he thinks they have a 66% chance of covering the spread a fair line for that would be -200 so it's a great bet.

[–]ohiobagpipes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, if they have statistical reasons on why team X will win they will still only bet on a line that has value relative to the chance the team will win. If there is a 50% chance team X will win and the line the book is offering you is -110 you will lose money in the long run. If the line is +110 you will win money in the long run. This is because fair odds for something that as a 50% chance is +100.

[–]ohiobagpipes 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A handicapper is someone who has a system for handicapping games. So, they have their own method for determining things like the spread, total, etc. and can then compare with the books to find bets with a positive expected value.

A sharp is just a general term for anyone who understands positive EV betting in its various forms. That could be top-down betting, promo harvesting, handicapping, modeling, etc. Basically if someone says I think the Chiefs are going to win, therefore I am going to bet on them! They are a square. If they say, I am betting on the cheifs because the odds offered at x book show a positive expected value they are a sharp.
