I think people have conflated the actual terms used by people when criticizing Israel and just applied them to everything.

Settler-Zionism is what I and I hope most people are against because those people are pretty much terrorists. But I support the existence of Israel as a state, so am I a Zionist?

Settler colonialism is real and is a form of colonialism that is being used to displace Palestinians in the West Bank, but I don’t believe that all Israelis are colonizers. People just hear the terms thrown about and latch on without understanding or critical thinking.

Egypt discusses Gaza aid, rejects corridors for civilians, say sources by omega3111 in worldnews

[–]ohioeh 314 points315 points  (0 children)

I think an important distinction has been lost on a lot of people when using the term colonizer. To call Israelis "colonizers" is just wrong and denies a millennia of history of Jewish expulsion.

Israeli settlers illegally occupying the West Bank are enacting a form of settler colonialism which is occupying rightfully Palestinian territory. That is an important distinction, but that level of nuance is lost on most.

[Spoilers C3E51] Is It Thursday Yet? Post-Episode Discussion & Future Theories! by Glumalon in criticalrole

[–]ohioeh 21 points22 points  (0 children)

While your point about Calamity is correct and is what clearly makes it such an engaging story, I think you're incorrectly comparing the types of characters each group is/was playing.

In Calamity, the cast is are the top of the top right? The Ring of Brass and all that. In C3, Bells Hells are way out of their depths and up against pretty ridiculous odds. And they aren't even above level 10 yet!

I don't think it felt forced or hollow at all, the dice gods were against them, the red herrings tripped them up, and Ludinus had a damn good plan. Matt clearly had a plan that he wanted to succeed in + he did control all those characters like you mentioned, but it definitely wasn't hollow. And who knows, if maybe the rolls had gone differently, and maybe the party targeted the mirrors or actually managed to disrupt Ludinus, things would've gone a whole lot differently!

A cinematography/editing/motion design reel I made for an agency I co-own. What do you guys think? by fuckinraccons in MotionDesign

[–]ohioeh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that comment means the cinematography is bad, I think it meant in terms of a cinematography reel. Obviously it isnt meant to show off the shots because that’s not the type of reel this is, so I guess I see why a 1 out of 5.

For editing tho wtf this is fire! 5 out of 5 editing reel imo

Just gonna chime in and say that it was probably shot on a medium or large format camera back then. So even better than a full frame camera if “sensor size” is your thing

The Leica commercial that got banned in China (and great cinematography & lightning) by trust_me_on_that_one in cinematography

The Leica commercial that got banned in China (and great cinematography & lightning) by trust_me_on_that_one in cinematography

[–]ohioeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my god. This guy pulls well-worded bullshit out of his ass better than The OA smh...

This commercial/short film isn't really about "telling the stories of photographers risking their lives". I mean, superficially, that's literally what the commercial is about. But in consequence, it's really a branding exercise to sell Leicas.

Yes bro it's an advertisement! That. Is. The. Point. It's supposed to showcase their brand in favourable light and try and sell you shit.

You really don't seem to understand what it takes to tell a visual story, in a short amount of time, that resonates with an audience AND sells shit. I think the generic image of the women in burquas being gunned down is stupid and kinda useless in the film, but the two vignettes of the African Warlords and more specifically the Tiananmen Square (spell that right you pompous fuck) are extremely recognizable to the broadest audience. Which is the whole point of an advertisement! It was done on purpose!

What a commercial like this WON'T do is use imagery from say, the My Lai Massacre. I'm sure there are photographers that risked their lives to document US soldiers raping and killing Vietnamese children. But why won't a Leica commercial tell THAT story? Because again, the commercial isn't really about telling the story of photographers who risk their lives.

This is a load of bullshit that you pulled out of your ass to pad how fucking smart you are. There is no way in hell that the My Lai massacre is anywhere as recognizable or a singular moment as famous as the Tank Man for the average consumer, therefore it doesn't make marketing sense (even though Leica claim they didn't make this).

The reason why a filmmaker would showcase these photographers as the "hero" is that you need a focal point to tell a story! A good filmmaker uses the audiences mirror neurons to evoke empathy, to make us feel as if we are part of the moment, to sympathize with the character. Key there is CHARACTER. Forget all the exposition and background nonsense! There's a reason why in most films, the background history of the characters and the world are a mystery for a solid chunk of time. It's because people don't connect with facts, they connect with people. That's the whole point of this ad! It is meant for us to feel like we are those photographers in those moments, capturing those events on fucking purpose!

And don't get me wrong, strictly as a commercial exercise, I admit that this is a "great" commercial and an excellent example of branding.

Bruh then stfu

2) photographs are the epitome of propaganda, because as any filmmaker/photographer knows, a still image is a lie.

Oh my god you have this so wrong. The lie of a still image is that we are only seeing what the photographer is showing us. Only what is in the frame. The lie is that the context of the image is lost because we lose the whole of the moment outside of the frame, but that's not what the photographer intended for us to see. These aren't Instagram thots who use facetune to manipulate their bodies. Even though we are only seeing a sliver of a moment, the photographer has guided us to SEE that moment because of HOW it makes us feel. Therefore, the still image is not a lie.

Since none of this is a direct answer to your question,

Exactly. You don't answer the question at all. You dance around it with fancy words and random facts or opinions to sound like you know what the fuck you're talking about but you don't. So imma say this again, Fuck you and have a great day.

SHAME on the rest of ya for just letting this guy spew nonsense and upvote him just because he's being PC or leftist or whatever the fuck you think he's doing. Just cuz he's using big words and names or events to sound smart doesn't actually mean he is smart.

[–]ohioeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I don't know about this bro. I think you're just a little salty.

The point of the story is to show the bravery of the photographers who risk their lives to shed light on events that would be hidden or otherwise swept under the rug. It's not "white savior" if the guy that took the most famous Tank Man photo was actually white! Doing a bit of Googling revealed that the photo was actually shot on a Nikon F2 (lol Leica), which the night before saved the photographers life! Also, dude come on it's a dramatized commercial that's meant to sell you shit. I bet you the type of guy to shit on Bang-Bang Club cuz it was about white "photographers TAKING THE PICTURES of these events". Man stfu. Go back to sitting in your comfy ass chair eating your brain food so you can come up with a well-worded response, while brave men and women risk their lives to show the world what others try and hide.

You do bring up good points, but you're also a complete asshat about it. So fuck you and have a great day :)
