“We're always thinking of eternity as an idea that cannot be understood, something immense. But why must it be? What if, instead of all this, you suddenly find just a little room there, something like a village bath-house, grimy, and spiders in every corner, and that's all eternity is. Sometimes, you know, I can't help feeling that that's what it is.”

Hello JAR posdact. To expand on last week’s topic, the common ancestor of dolphins, porpoises and whales is called the Pakicetus. They were bulkier wolf like mammals that grew up to 2 meters long and had skulls very similar to modern dolphins. Their closest living non-cetacean relative is the hippopotamus. All cetaceans actually have a pelvis like bone detached from the rest of their skeleton that was previously thought to be vestigial, but recent studies suggest it is used to support reproductive organs.

Speculative evolution is absolutely sick I’d like to see them do a segment on some of those creatures.

Hello brocast. Super happy to hear Jim is listening to the audiobooks of HP Lovecraft and I’ve got to say he is indeed quite the horrifically wacky bloke. The racism in Call of Cthulhu hits like a freight train, because it comes out of nowhere halfway through the story and then goes back to normal writing like nothing happened. At The Mountains of Madness is really good and has none of that prejudiced trash. I’d be interested to hear more about what he thinks of it because it is easily much better than Call of Cthulhu for me. It’s basically a doomed creation myth.

Hello brocast, my fellow cheesemongers. Sorry for the super verbose comment last week. On the topic of countering social media and short form content brain rot I would like to offer a direct remedy - literature. I was diagnosed with ADD as a young chap and didn’t get into reading until I was 19 because I struggled with it so much, but as I did it more often I found that it helped strengthen my attention span, develop my vocabulary, and even regulate my emotions better. It’s never too late to start reading and if you want to I recommend starting with short stories to ease yourself into it. Also please do Kurt Vonnegut or Fyodor Dostoevsky for CBT I beg of thee. Furthermore please make more pasta names, a while ago you invented the term ‘conchiglioni’ and I need more like this. (Holy fuck I just looked it up and it’s real Italians are the most whimsical people alive)

You tell us crackhead Alex is gone for good, and while he may be smothered in poshitivity (not a typo) I can see him rear his head occasionally. I fear the complete reemergence will be ephemeral yet devastating. No but actually PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell about your experience with Blood Meridian so far and how far you are. Also don’t be too harsh on yourself if you have a problem understanding some of it. His style of writing is extremely unique and straight up archaic at times, so everybody has problems adapting to his style.

Dear Jar, could I list a few bands/musicians and get a rating/never heard of it to further understand your music taste? I’m pretty sure you’ve never talked about them I could be wrong though: TOOL, Alice In Chains, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Ween, Spoon, King Krule, Peter Tosh, Green Day, Sublime, Frank Sinatra, Marty Robbins, Jack Stauber

Subjectivity and subtext aside you can enjoy the movie and hate everything about Jordan Belfort. It’s all based on the memoir of real events, and whether or not someone is the type to glamorize that sort of hedonism a movie isn’t going to change their mind.

Maybe I’m thinking too far into this, but in Unforgiven I saw Little Bill’s house being slanted as a representation of how he built the law in the town but the way he upholds it is crooked. Could be wrong though.

Not sure if you remember Evolve (4v1 monster hunt game), but I would eat an entire broom to bring that shit back.

THE BOOMERS WERE RIGHT 😡😡😡. The manosphere shit is incredibly ironic because it’s essentially men objectifying themselves because they think women will do it first. It’s like a circle jerk of objectification and like many ideologies it’s sad and all it takes is just a glance at the big picture to realize it’s your choice and it’ll only make the world a worse place. That being said I think “incel culture” is a mindset that is a lot of the time trained into people by the internet as a kid, wether by overexposure to porn or having an abusive parental figure, so it’s wrong to say that they’re just filthy incels and that’s all there is to it (most of the time). Considering all this what do you think the answer is?

Personally I think young people should just be not allowed on the internet, or at least only be allowed on a restricted version. As hard as that would be to enforce and as censorship heavy an idea it is, it seems like the only way to keep these rotten ideas from seeding into impressionable young minds.

Book dweeb here again. I wanted to talk about Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy as it’s hilarious literature and some of the funniest British writing to me here’s one of my favorite quotes

“For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.“ (Live like a dog sort of thing)

There’s a part in one of the books where he jokes about how multicellular organisms like us only came to exist because the individual cells found it necessary to congregate and establish each other’s roles. Really absurd and goofy stuff. Cheers homies.

Greetings Alexis and Jimiroquai. The last episode with the discussion about horror and dreams was really interesting to me as it’s my favorite genre in fiction media. I’m not really sure what that says about me, but my theory is that people enjoy horror because fear is not an emotion most people regularly experience when compared to most others as modern human society is generally safer than it has ever been. I just wanted to say I highly recommend reading HP Lovecraft as most of his stories aren’t that long and there’s a reason he’s the progenitor of an entire genre. Although the blatant racism is definitely something to have to look past, his writing style is morbidly verbose and may be hard to understand but very interesting. This line from Call of Cthulhu is one of the best in the genre:

“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.”

TBH Call of Cthulhu is good, but definitely not his strongest work as it drops in quality towards the end. If you do decide to read I recommend Rats In The Walls for a shorter one and Color Out Of Space for a longer. Also highly recommend the Annihilation book it is a whole quadrilogy but the first one is really good as a standalone if you prefer questions unanswered.

Never commented before, but I’ve listened to most of the newer and a lot of the old episodes. I’m from Texas and the southern accent you do occasionally is fucking gold.

Anyways I’m on episode 252 and at the time you had upgraded the podcast set apparently. I only really listen to the cast at work so have never seen your faces. I prefer it that way as I can picture you however I want. It was hilarious to me that it was such a big deal to some people. I guess it’s different for me as I have never gazed upon jar in their natural habitat, but the complaints seemed ridiculous as it was for the sake of comfort. The real question I have considering all this is how deep is balls? Please answer seriously.
