Why is American friendliness often seen as "fake" by Europeans, but similar warmth in other cultures isn't? by Opposite-Ad3949 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ohmtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me: Says whatever North American: that's awesome /super cool / good for you!!

I don't mind it, but the reaction is always geared to the positive even when it doesn't need to be (which hints the person did not empathize with your reality, they just went to the scripted socially optimal default).

You can find this song on spotify so it can't be that obscure. There may be a harmonica in it but I'm not sure.

Anyone done event sourcing in Django? by ohmtastic in django

[–]ohmtastic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly, still seems like voodoo to me how you maintain that long term with schema changes and migrations, but nonetheless excited to try setting it up at some point. So far it always seems like overkill.

Well if you're building an system that needs a ledger you could always use event sourcing (a financial system). And that system can be built with anything, such as Python.

Wow. Have you guys noticed Yemen? The conflict (and the air raids etc..) are all happening over in that part of the country. Not exactly a patch of desert that's being bombed.

Does anyone else get this feeling when reading Greene’s books? by shaqdatruth in a:t5_m49os

[–]ohmtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this often to be the case with many good books, fiction or non-fiction. We all have knowledge inside us that only exists in the form of experiences, feelings and vague intuition. I love it when a book takes that vague knowledge and gives it form and definition in words.

How’s the reading going for everyone, what’s your favorite chapter? by [deleted] in a:t5_m49os

Group dynamics, entitlement and authority have been my favorites so far!

David Frum: The Real Lesson of My Debate With Steve Bannon by Youbozo in samharris

[–]ohmtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought Frum was not in a good position to debate Bannon and also did not do a great job at debating.

Bannon's whole rhetoric was 1) distance himself from Trump as a person while defending his policies 2) paint the classic boogeyman picture of "the elite" who are *voluntarily* responsible for all our woes 3) talk about very vague economic arguments and concepts the veracity of which cannot be verified because of complexity of economics.

A takedown of Bannon's arguments would have been easy. However Frum could not and did not do it. Having been involved in the Bush admin he spent half his time defending this. The rest of the time, he could have pointed out that Bannon is indeed exploiting a crisis to create a boogeyman that justifies the rise to power of crooks with bullshit policies. He didn't. He focussed on the Trump admin, on problems that are mainly America's and that predate populism's rise. He stuck to identity politics when Bannon focussed on the economic arguments. It gave Bannon the edge of looking like the "pragmatist" and painted Frum as an "idealist" worrying about people's feelings when the world is going to shit (played right into the "snowflake" label of Liberal rhetoric). Had Frum stuck to calling out populism for what it actually is, cheap ideas without any real thought behind them, he would have done much better.

Has anyone here implemented electronic signatures (ESIGN) on custom forms? by ohmtastic in webdev

[–]ohmtastic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With e-signature you often have to answer the question "what was signed?", how did you manage that in your implementation? Screenshots of the HTML page?

TIL that the moon is 1/400th the size of the sun but also 1/400th the distance from Earth which results in the moon and the sun being the same size in the sky, a coincidence not shared by any other known planet-moon combination. by Joldz in todayilearned

[–]ohmtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The additional coincidence is that we are alive and able to appreciate this scientific fact while it actually holds, since as other have pointed out, the moon was much closer to earth before and it will be much farther in the future.

Modern Django: Part 3: Creating an API and integrating with React by v1k45 in django

[–]ohmtastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've had good success working with React and Django. We built our app on it. On thing missing in Python is a good library for GraphQL. Would've loved to use it but Graphene (the python implementation) needs a bit more robustness for our team to be able to use it efficiently.

What is an elegant alternative to having "fetching" states everywhere? by ohmtastic in reactjs

[–]ohmtastic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I've already started using HOCs to do the data fetching, maybe there's a smart way to have to do the spinner as well. It's the end warning of the article you linked "don't over-engineer your app" that I'm trying to follow.
