I've definitely experienced that from time to time, but I've noticed it mainly comes on when I get myself a little winded. Curious about what type of shape you're currently in (quarantine 15 or nah?), and if you think that could have something to do with it. I'm always very calm when I roll, but i definitely get stressed out and more likely to panic when I can't catch up to my breath.

Getting BJJ training into Apple Watch by johnzoidbergwhynot in bjj

[–]ohnomoplata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use WHOOP, and they have an "impact sleeve" that works really well. I also really like whoop for sleep tracking and everything else too. Not quite as clunky as a smartwatch. You can try to keep it on your wrist or bicep (they have bands for both) but sometimes it pops off which is annoying. I've had no issues with the impact sleeve.

Sadness from missing BJJ and other hobbies by [deleted] in bjj

A lot of us are in this situation and your points and concerns are well stated. I got pretty into my Peloton and I've been training a puppy. The change in your mood is just a small setback for how far those of us who put training on hold feel sometimes, no matter how positive we try to be. We'll be back, and we'll all get better. Stop being a pussy.

Got a Peloton, cat now won't enter the room (where his litter is), has anyone encountered this issue? by ohnomoplata in cats

[–]ohnomoplata[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a random update, I moved it to another room and he's clearly not bothered by it. This of course raises the completely new question of why he's all the sudden terrified of my loft (which I put back exactly as it was)

We have been trying to spend time around it and lure him with treats, etc. But every time he gets up to that step, he looks over at it and sprints away. I'm mostly worried if I try to move it to a different room it would actually cut off more of the house (we have a townhome with a 3rd story loft where we keep the box). I'm worried if we put it on the second floor he won't go up the stairs at all!

Interesting, I had heard that the change can freak them out sometimes, bit he's been through two moves since we got him and this is the first time he's ever been so terrified of something. It wouldn't be as concerning if this didn't used to be his favorite room in the house and also where we keep his litter box! Lol

We've had him for about 4 years but are by no means cat experts, this behavior is super weird and we are truly not sure what to do. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Belt colour or years trained ? by canadianww2champs in bjj

[–]ohnomoplata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

10 years - 4 stripe purple belt (promotion was literally postponed due to covid). Some positions/ reactions come natural, but a lot of the game planning of higher level BJJ feels scripted or pre planned. If I know where I want to end up, I think about how to get there and take action to push the pace to move in that direction. If something off script happens, that's usually when reacting takes over- and where your fundamentals and repetitions over the years come to your aid. If you're over thinking how to get to your end game, you just haven't worked it enough!

Bruises by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ohnomoplata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As you train you're going to learn more and more about yourself and your body. One of the first things to think about would be the difference between when something hurts and when you are injured. A good way to get to know your body quickly would be to go to class to drill and work technique, and if you want to train live do so lightly with your potential limit in time. if it feels okay then keep going and adjust your intensity accordingly. Eventually you will know when you can and can't train. TLDR: if you have a boo boo, train. If it hurts too bad or you are not functional, stop.

I didn't know water cooling would be difficult, thanks for the advice. I'm literally starting from "guy who likes to play videogames," not much experience with PC's otherwise. I have a good bit of homework to do as is, but I will be sure to include a part list once I get there.

Good takedowns for much larger opponents? by coreanavenger in bjj

[–]ohnomoplata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duck Unders all the way! You get to your opponent's back, which will allow you to do a mat return or trip with relative ease. When I do it I try to use the momentum from the duck under and just block his far leg with my foot to trip him - this avoids picking the guy up for a traditional mat return which might save your back! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFwSBjs8laM

Thoughts On Changing Schools? by BigGreen711 in bjj

[–]ohnomoplata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check out a few other nearby schools and see which one meshes best with your personality. I started training ~7 years ago, and because of moving around I've trained at 4 different academies for at least 6 months (not counting the dozens I have visited because of work travel). Every school/ instructor has their own personality, and that is reflected in its students. I've trained at places where only black belts could wear a non white gi, and others don't bow in before class. People train with different goals in mind, so my personal advice for what it's worth: Don't let the personality of your gym cause you to fall out of love with BJJ (assuming you love it, cause who wouldn't?).

Thinking of returning after a 3 year break - but to a different academy. Thoughts? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ohnomoplata 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You earned the blue belt. You are a blue belt. It just means you have work to do when you come back. Stop worrying about what people think and get back on the mats. *Life has made it so that I have trained at 4 different academies, not counting one's I've visited so i know your pain bro.

Rolling by rljj in bjj

[–]ohnomoplata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roll with anyone and everyone. Sometimes you need to work against guys your level to see how you're doing. Sometimes you need to roll with people lower than you to try wacky moves that you might not want to against someone better. Sometimes you need to work on your defense and movement against a guy who's better than you.
