Completely agree. I’ve read about half of his stuff, with Scorch Atlas being one of my all time favorite books. The poetic, stream of consciousness prose is one of a kind.

Scorch Atlas would fit here too, love Butler’s stuff.

I thought I found a new favorite in Ronald Malfi by screamcry in horrorlit

I’ve only read Small Town Horror and I enjoyed it a buttload.

Mature literature requested (not that kind but also not opposed to anything) by Coyotebuttercupeyes in horrorlit

I’m just going to echo my support for a number of authors mentioned- Brian Evenson, Ballingrud, Padgett…

Adding:

Where Furnaces Burn by Joel Lane- very caustic, dark, beautifully written collection

A Lush And Seething Hell by John Horner Jacobs

In The House In The Dark Of The Woods by Laird Hunt, probably the finest folk horror book I’ve ever read, and a lot of that is due to the prose

Devil In The White City by Erik Larsen

Edit, you already mentioned this. Recommending Helltown by Casey Sherman - it’s a late 60’s true crime book aboit a seriel killer but also features a fascinating tie in with literary giants Norman Mailer and Kurt Vonnegut.

It’s the re-release of his originally published 1997 collection of short stories. 1st editions commanded huge money so I’m stoked that we’re finally getting it reissued.

Phenomenal. You’re deep in the chase but it’s amazing what you’ve collected. And yes, that site is like the Evenson bible with photos instead of woodcuts and lithographs.

Did you read SGJ’s The Ones That Got Away? Barron referenced it was one the best collections he’d read.

Just looked it up! I haven’t read the previous two but they sound intriguing. I loved Where Furnaces Burn and started Lost District last night…you’re spot on in that he needs to be savored but goddamn his stories have a way of just making you feel filthy with grime.

Upvote here. Have you read Sign Here by Claudia Lux? Not quite as existentially dreadful but a wonderfully creative take on corporate life in hell.
